Boy, 10, suspected of fatally stabbing friend, 12

EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — A 10-year-old boy is suspected of fatally stabbing a 12-year-old friend in the chest with a kitchen knife, authorities say.

The older boy died Monday afternoon at a hospital after he was taken from his friend's home in El Cajon, about 15 miles east of San Diego, said the San Diego County sheriff's department. The mother of the 10-year-old was at home at the time of the stabbing, according to the U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/zlsHQb).

Sheriff's officials have taken the 10-year-old into custody. Sheriff's homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit says "the case will be up to the juvenile justice system."

It remained unclear whether the boy had been booked into the juvenile detention system. The sheriff's office did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press, but said in a statement early Tuesday that the boys' identities would not be released because of their ages.

Neighbors say the 12-year-old boy lived in a nearby mobile home park but the two friends attended different schools.

A neighbor of the younger boy, 18-year-old Derek Gorton, told the newspaper he had emotional issues, and that something as small as tapping him on the shoulder the wrong way or losing at a video game could spark outrage.

"Even though he threw temper tantrums, we never thought he'd do anything like this," said Gorton.

Gorton's father, Brian Richeson, said the boy usually had verbal outbursts, but he hadn't seen him throwing things or hitting others. He praised the boy's mother, saying she had dealt with her son's problems head-on.

"She was the best mom I've ever met," Richeson told the U-T. "She knew how to take care of him if he was yelling and screaming."

In my younger years the neighborhood kids, were a "click" if anyone of our friends acted this outrageous all of us would kindly kick his #$%$ and not hang around with that individual ever again. Fighting is a good way of releasing steam.

So sad that a 10 year old would do something like this.
      • Hounddoggin 4 mths ago
It's sadder that a 12 year kid is dead and the 10 year old won't have to do more than 8 years time for killing him.

No, even when you were watching and playing those things, similar atrocities were to have happened, whether you heard about them or not. This is a saddening story, but it is not unique insofar that it happened to someone else. Perhaps you mean that the media is more able to report. R.I.P.

There was a story on here other day about guy in his 50's killing his wife. Old people do crazy crap too. Everything started going down hill after the 50's.

Sounds like the kid had some sort of psychiatric problems that weren't being dealt with. If merely tapping him on the shoulder would send him into a rage, it was only a matter of time before he became physically violent with someone.

Sounds like the kid had no dad in the story....

Mother's usually drive the fathers away with all the nagging & complaining, then file for support so she can be with her lesbian lover. A child will rebel once he see the same gender together

When I was 10 and was mad at someone I would call them a 4 letter name or give them a one digit salutation and then they told my mom and she would beat the crap out of me......Justice was served then. Too many kids are on some kind of emotional reducing drugs these days and then they go crazy.......He will end up in a facility until 18 and then let go and that is the time to monitor him

Don't start giving mood stabilizers a bad name, while people ignore the more silent dangers of "recreational drugs" like marijuana.

If you're cursing and flipping people off at 10...your parents didn't do a good job either.

When my kids were young, there was a neighborhood child that had issues that sound very much like this child. The kid had some sort of psychological problem, I can't remember the name but I do remember the dad telling me the kid didn't have the ability to 'calm down' so if he got mad he just kept hyping himself up.

He would fly into incredible rages over the slightest thing and even start hitting his mom. One Halloween, all the neighborhood kids including this one went out trick or treating and my son, who was very young, bumped into the boy accidently and the boy began screaming and punched my son. My youngest daughter saw this and promptly decked the boy and they began fighting until we pulled them apart. He than began screaming and throwing things so the parents had to physically carry him off.

I honestly felt sorry for the kid because he never had any friends when he was young.

When he got into his teens, the parents found a counselor who put him on medication and taught him coping skills and he eventually made some friends.

I wonder if he has trouble forming relationships as an adult?
      • jerry d. 4 mths ago
        it took that long, Geeees
      • Retired_LC 4 mths ago
In addition to problems with relationships, I recall the kid couldn't do sports for a long time because he could not keep his anger in check if something didn't turn out like he wanted. The parents always looked very sad, it sure put things in perspective to me when my kids would bring home a bad grade from school. I would remind myself I was just dealing with a bad grade while that kids parents would probably LOVE to switch places with me and just have to deal with bad grades.

When we were children, the 3 stooges were all the rage.We never had to be told NOT to hit another kid with a hammer,or run a saw across his nose, etc. All I hear is how much smarter todays kids are than we were.Difference in my day was your parents would beat your butt if you did something that was deemed inappropriate.Thank you Govt. for all your meddling(oopps,I meant help)

Doesn't anyone fight with their fists anymore? When me and my little brother got into a fight,we would beat the crap out of one another. Then our parents would beat the crap out of us.Nowadays you kill the person you are fighting with, and then your parents.Something has gone horribly wrong.

My youngest son stabbed my older son in the hand with a pencil at his mother's house. All I will say is that I took action and that was 17 years ago and the problem never repeated itself.. Yes, he was disciplined on the bare behind with my hand. Many of you will give advice, trust me, I exhausted all other avenues with his temper. If you love your son, you will chasten them early.

so sad, my son used to kind of act like that, but we got counseling and now at age 10 he is a happy and well adjusted boy. we are so lucky we were able to get help. don't judge this mother it is not easy.

Hey NK, every since there's been TV, there's been violence. I don't blame the TV shows, I blame parents that don't teach their kids right from wrong. I watched the Lone Ranger shoot bad guys all the time. Never made me want to do the same! Just made me dislike bad guys.

WIth all the restrictions against parents and teachers not being able to discipline their children. Crap like this will continue to happen. You can't even look at your kids the wrong way. There will be a #$%$ somewhere ready to call child services.

When we were kids we got in trouble for throwing ROCKS! Yeah, and aiming play guns at each other! AND a soap bar in our mouth for saying Bad Words. Couldn't run or it would be worst!! Restrictions were meant and kept. We LOVED our Parents and respected them tremendously. Thank God for discipline!! None of us ever went to JAIL, nor Juvenile Hall.

My next door neighbors kid is already showing this type of behavior. In front of both of his parents and us he choked our son twice and pushed him down. It is hard for you to fathom a 3 year old doing this to a 2 year old so you try to write it off as them playing and nothing more so you let it go. but recently the 3 year old hit my 2 year old son with a truck and cut his face. The parents did nothing. They actually said he was having digestive problems that was why he is acting out. The scary thing was as blood was pouring our of his face the kid sat down and smiled. You would expect panic and him saying I am sorry and crying for forgiveness, this kid did not. Truly terrifying. They won't ever be together again. The parents in this case have been told by my wife and I, Both of their mothers and fathers and there sisters who also have kids. They were insulted when their parents suggested that he needs professional help because he is out of control. It is a shame because he isn't going to get the help he needs to fix this problem.
