    Boy, 6, injured in park in mountain lion attack

    BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Texas (AP) — Officials at Big Bend National Park in West Texas are looking for a mountain lion that attacked and injured a 6-year-old boy as he walked with three other people.

    Park spokesman David Elkowitz says the boy was treated for puncture wounds and scratches and released from a hospital in Alpine.

    The lion remains on the loose.

    Rangers began evacuating trails and campsites early Monday. Closed areas include the Chisos Basin, Window Trail, the Pinnacles, Boulder Meadow and Juniper Flats.

    Elkowitz says the young boy was walking near the park's lodge with three other people Sunday evening when he was attacked by a "young lion in very poor condition." The boy's name wasn't released.

    Elkowitz says the animal that attacked the boy will be killed if found.

      As the lions become less afraid of people and more urbanized, we can expect more attacks of this sort.

      Obviously, the lion was starving and thought he could "cut" the weakest one from the herd. One of the inherent dangers of going out into the wild is that sometimes "the wild" sees us a a food group.

      I'm glad the child is okay, but this is what Nature does, and if you want to go into the parks you have to go with the realization that sometimes you're going to look tasty...or perceived as a danger and charged.

      I've been to Big Bend many times. Large predators are not uncommon there.

      It helps if you are in a large group, and at least one person has a stout knife or hatchet on them. Some of the trails are long and remote. You don't want to be attacked up there without some way to fight or scare the animal off.

        Clearly you've either never been to the park, or you are the idiot. Mountain lions and even bears have been seen very close to marked trails. Animals raid campsites all the time. We had a small mammal sneak into our tent, while we were sleeping. We scared the #$%$ out of it, and it ran away.Keep on believing that animals give a hoot about the difference between marked trails and rugged terrain. However, I assure you that only human beings care about which trails are marked.

      Probably a young lion, inexperienced at hunting, and not able to hold or find hunting territory. (Thus starving.) Mountain lion attacks are rare.

      If it was a 6 year old Mt Lion attacted by humans, nobody would care. Humans are not the "top" of the food chain, they just think they are.

        Obviously you can't read, Bob! I said the WILD, you know AWAY from civilization, or a ZOO, or WILDLIFE PARK, where it and people will be safe! Perhaps you can read caps a little better! Since I live in Orange County then the mountain lions already live in my backyard and I'm not complaining about them.

      Why is it that shooting the animal is the answer. Can't he be nursed back to health and released into another area? Big cats are being wiped out like many other animals man deems dangerous or taking over their land.

      The animal is in poor condition, probably injured and starving or just starving, so putting it down will be humane.

      Umm I thought a reason for the National Park System was to be a refuge for animal habitat. Do you really have to kill the mountain lion?? There are only two dozen left in Big Bend So you want to shoot the lion. Really?? Is this a park or Disneyworld?? I've been in Big Bend and it's magnificent: Do we really want to sanitize Big Bend so there is no danger at all?? I'm so bummed by this.

      sounds like a starving young lion with a bad sense of food groups. actually I HOPE that young lion does manage to run down some small prey and get back on his feet so he can learn to hunt normally. I'm very sorry the little boy was injured. I'm sure it was traumatic to him.

      Yeah, we're really having trouble thinning out the ungulate population in Texas. Obviously we need a few more elk hunting permits.
