Boys should get HPV vaccine too, panel says

ATLANTA (AP) — The controversial HPV shot given to girls should also be given to boys, in part to help prevent the spread of the virus through sex, a government medical panel said Tuesday.

The expensive vaccine, which protects females against cervical cancer, hasn't been popular. And doctors admit it will be a tough sell to parents of 11- and 12-year-old males, too.

For males, the vaccine is licensed to prevent genital warts and anal cancer. Experts say another key benefit of routinely vaccinating boys could be preventing the spread of the human papilloma virus to others through sex — making up somewhat for the disappointing vaccination rate in girls.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices made the recommendation Tuesday. Federal health officials usually adopt what the panel says and asks doctors and patients to follow the advice.

The vaccine has been available to boys for two years but Tuesday's vote was the first to strongly recommend routine vaccination. Officials acknowledged the disappointing rate in girls encouraged them to take a new, hard look.

Just 49 percent of adolescent girls have gotten at least the first of the recommended three HPV shots, which have been recommended for girls for five years. Only a third had gotten all three doses by last year.

"Pretty terrible," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention administrator who oversees the agency's immunization programs.

She attributed the low rates for girls to confusion or misunderstanding by parents that they can wait until their daughter becomes sexually active. It works best if the shots are given before a girl begins having sex.

The vaccine is approved for use in boys and girls ages 9 to 26; but it is usually given to 11- and 12-year olds when they are scheduled to get other vaccines.

The committee also recommended the vaccination for males 13 through 21 years who have not been vaccinated previously or who have not completed the three-dose series.

Tuesday's vote follows recent studies that indicate the vaccine prevents anal cancer in males. A study that focused on gay men found it to be 75 percent effective. But while anal cancer has been increasing, it's still a fairly rare cancer in males, with only about 7,000 cases in the U.S. each year that are tied to the strains of viruses targeted in the HPV vaccine. In contrast, about vaccine-preventable 15,000 cervical cancers occur annually.

Some feel it's unlikely that most families will agree to get their sons vaccinated primarily to protect girls. An estimated 50 percent to 80 percent of men and women are infected with HPV in their lifetimes, although most clear the infection without developing symptoms or illness, according to the CDC.

The threat of genital warts hasn't been persuasive yet, either: Some data suggest that less than 1.5 percent of adolescent males have gotten the vaccine.

Its use against anal cancer may not be much of a selling point, said Dr. Ranit Mishori, a family practice doctor in Washington, D.C., and an assistant professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Some parents may say "'Why are you vaccinating my son against anal cancer? He's not gay! He's not ever going to be gay!' I can see that will come up," said Mishori, who supports the committee's recommendation.

There are two vaccines against HPV, but Tuesday's vote applies only to Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, which costs $130 a dose. The other vaccine wasn't tested for males.

If the vaccine is controversial for girls then it is just as controversial for boys.

See the CDC website (Center for Disease Control) over 70 deaths and 20,000 cases of serious side effects!

There probably are no studies. Guys are expendable, who cares is the vaccine kills a few? At least, that is how the government and the feminists view it.

@ L K -Maybe. But they are #$%$ awesome and I WILL continue with both thank you. Missionary died long before I was even a wetspot on my dad's boxers.@ This -Screw it. We live, we die. This has been "proven" to block only a few of the MANY strains of HPV. I'll pass. Not worth the laundry list of side-effects that are far worse. Call me horrible, but honestly, **** you. I don't plan on living past 100. I see no reason to. I'll do what I can and what I want until that day comes. Then I'll call it a good life. I'd rather LIVE than be scared all the time about what might hurt me. For all of you cancer survivors, or not, congrats and bless you and all, but I DON'T HONESTLY CARE. NOTHING will get me to take a drug that has more proven side-effects than supposed benefits. HPV is already proven to be far more naturally occurring, and the rarity of the actually BAD forms of HPV is more than enough for me to say 'MEH'. Yeah, cancer and disease and all that other stuff is awful and all, but I don't see ANYBODY making headway on stopping them. We've wasted our time twidding our thumbs up our #$%$ trying to make money instead of trying to help ourselves live as humans.

40 years ago, doctors and the FDA recommended DES for pregnant women to prevent miscarriages. 15 or 20 years later, girls born of those pregnancies were developing rare vaginal cancers. Other types of cancer and cysts have developed all these years later in girls and boys born to those mothers, and the mothers themselves have been tracked with breast cancer that may be linked to DES. "This HPV vaccine MAY prevent..."? "...WILL prevent..."? How do they know??? Maybe this chemical junk will do nothing of the sort, but will create other problems down the line. Think long and hard before you start pumping your kids with stuff that stays in the body long-term.

Tell me how my niece was safe when she suffered a seizure leaving the building after getting her second shot? Take you vaccine plan and shove it until this thing is safe.
      • K Wilson 7 mths ago
Did the seizure kill her? Because cancer does kill. Nothing in pharamcueticals exists without possible side effects. Do you refuse the flu shot? That has side effects.
      • C 7 mths ago
I agree, my boys will not get this vaccine. If schools make it mandatory for middle school entrance then I will homeschool and if our pediatrician drops us for not giving it (and feeding them evil whole milk) then I will find a naturopath pediatrician.

Do they know for sure it was the vaccine??? I've seen plenty of nervous kids pass out and seize from getting a shot!!!! It happens more often than you know!!

I am a male and I took it. I fully endorse such a decision. Afterall, men are the carriers of the disease.
      • Jon 7 mths ago
You are absolutely correct and you made a responsible decision that just made an impact on someone else's health!
      • James 7 mths ago
Females are not capable of carrying and transmitting HPV? Hmmm. Somehow I think you are not being completely honest.
      • Easy P 7 mths ago
No James... Men carry and often transmit the disease because they show no signs or symptoms.
    • Underwater  •  7 mths ago
I suspect a few years down the road we'll be hearing/seeing the negative effects of this drug. Rather than getting your kids immunized with an unknown, try teaching them abstinence or safe sex.
      • K Wilson 7 mths ago
        Sure because that work....hahahah
      • Penny 7 mths ago
Good luck with that!! Kids will be kids and hormones will be hormones they are going to have sex!! Protect them!!!!
      • Methusaleh Bible 7 mths ago
You people tick me off. Children will do what they are taught and told to do because that's how it is. If this isn't so, give up your children because you are not a parent. The implication that we/our children are animals ruled by "hormones" is ridiculous. No sex before eighteen. Period.

I don't trust the government or Big Pharma on this. There is too much money involved.
    • Thomas  •  7 mths ago
another well placed article proposing the HPV vaccine, -- last weeks was one saying that the numbers of vaccinations is down and that some people who have had one are not going back for the rest of the regime. I think Big pharma is soliciting our money and our health insurance money.

I think the American population is just getting more stupid.

Government butting in again, most HPV clears up on it's own without treatment. In a few years, there will be lawsuits over this vaccine causing side-effects.
    • 11  •  7 mths ago
Teach abstinence to teenage boys? Keep living in your dream world. I remember those days and they are the best time for sex! Get your heads out of the sand folks. Kids have always had and always will have sex. Its just the way it is. Teach safe sex, they aint going to stop!
    • A Yahoo! User  •  7 mths ago
Merck just can't make enough money legitimately so let's get the government to pressure and ultimately force boys to get the shot too. At $500 a pop, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.Corporatism, not capitalism rears its ugly head again

There are diseases that are considered "super bugs" that are immune to certain treatments and some of those bugs are even found in some STD's. If these treatments prevent less than 100%, then there is a chance of developing a super bug.
    • L K  •  6 mths ago
Oral and anal sex are unhealthy. Both should be avoided.

Ever wonder why vaccine related injuries reported by parents get so little mass media attention? It's easy to understand when you realize that although a federally decreed reporting system does exist for vaccine injuries, the agency itself simply stores them in a data base that doesn't influence most medical professionals, vaccine manufacturers, and mainstream media.

      Understanding VAERS
The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) was established as part of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA) of 1986. VAERS is sponsored by the CDC and FDA, both vaccine friendly government agencies. Another part of the NCVIA is the establishment of a federal "no fault" compensation program for parents of vaccine injured or killed children.

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) was set up to award claims to parents through the US Court of Federal Claims. Of course, claimants had to establish a causal connection with their child's issues from recent vaccinations.

The compensations vary from $250,000 for the death of a child, or a life time of medical coverage for a brain damaged child. The awards are federally funded, "bailing out" vaccine manufacturers from financial liability. The fact that over $1 billion has been paid out since 1986 is the government's secret admission of vaccine dangers.

As in most settlements, awarded parents are gagged from talking of their case by the risk of losing their "hush money" covering lifetime medical expenses.

Many parents are still programmed to believe their child's sudden mental or physical health downturn had nothing to do with all those vaccinations they allowed their pediatrician to deliver. And less naive parents don't even know about VAERS or the compensation program, which are as unwieldy and bureaucratic as government systems can be.

It's estimated that as low as one or two percent with no more than 10% of vaccine adverse reactions are reported. Although doctors are legally obliged to report adverse vaccine reactions to VAERS, most don't. The FDA admits that probably 90% of doctors simply don't report adverse vaccine reactions. Yet even with this denial and resistance, up to 20,000 adverse vaccine reactions are reported annually.

Keep in mind that VAERS officially states their data base file of adverse reports does not make causal connections to vaccines. Those non-reporting MDs usually dismiss serious reactions as unrelated to vaccines. Or worse yet, they blame the parents and accuse them of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS).

      Blaming the victims
Some parents have been imprisoned for trying to resuscitate their babies or rush them into emergency rooms upon noticing sudden dire symptoms. Usually those babies died.

In many cases, those infants had just received multiple shots of vaccines pushed by their pediatricians. Are those records considered without bias in the courts where accused parents stand? But local media and press cover these incidents to trump up lurid crime attention, yet they won't mention vaccinations. That's taboo.

Another rising syndrome masking vaccine injuries is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), or crib death. These infants suddenly die for apparently no cause. Often they had recently been vaccinated. But let's not look into that. Better to consider SIDS a strangely mysterious epidemic among newborns and get more money for more research.

Perhaps October's vaccine awareness month should focus more on reporting adverse events to reach a tipping point against the resistance of vaccine truth. Otherwise the Medical Mafia will continue jabbing children to oblivion.

If y'all could vaccinate your boy from prostate cancer you would do it in a heartbeat. Can't you see your sexual hangups are just blinding you from the right thing to do? Do it...and if the Rx companies get rich from it, so be it...it's still the right thing to do for your children.
