BP emails reveal company veiling spill rate

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — On the day the Deepwater Horizon sank, BP officials warned in an internal memo that if the well was not protected by the blow-out preventer at the drill site, crude oil could burst into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of 3.4 million gallons a day, an amount a million gallons higher than what the government later believed spilled daily from the site.

The email conversation, which BP agreed to release Friday as part of federal court proceedings, suggests BP managers recognized the potential of the disaster in its early hours, and company officials sought to make sure that the model-developed information wasn't shared with outsiders. The emails also suggest BP was having heated discussions with Coast Guard officials over the potential of the oil spill.

The memo was released as part of the court proceedings to determine the division of responsibility for the nation's worst offshore oil disaster, which began when the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, 2010, killing 11 men about 50 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast. The first phase of the trial is set to start Feb. 27.

BP officials declined to comment on the emails late Friday.

The official amount of oil that flowed from the well was pegged at 206 million gallons from at least April 22 until the well was capped on July 15, a period of 85 days. That's a daily flow rate of about 2.4 million gallons — two-thirds of the way to BP's projection of what could leak from the well if it was an "open hole." BP has disputed the government's estimates.

Having an accurate flow rate estimate is needed to determine how much in civil and criminal penalties BP and the other companies drilling the well face under the Clean Water Act.

In the memo, a BP official urges not to share the flow-rate projections and refers to the "difficult discussions" the company was having at the time with the Coast Guard.

Gary Imm, a BP manager, told Rob Marshall, BP's subsea manager in the Gulf, to tell the modeler doing the estimates "not to communicate to anyone on this."

"A number of people have been looking at this we already have had difficult discussions with the USCG on the numbers," Imm said in the email string, referring to the Coast Guard and flow estimates.

On April 23, 2010, the Coast Guard, relying on BP's remotely operated vehicles, said no oil was leaking from the well a mile under the sea. A day later, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry announced that oil was leaking an estimated rate of 42,000 gallons a day. The Coast Guard and BP did not divulge how they reached that figure.

In the second week after the spill, the official flow rate was increased to 210,000 gallons a day, an estimate the government continued to use until May 27.

On May 24, BP informed Congress they used an "undisclosed method to generate much higher figures" than the official estimates, according to a report from a presidential commission investigating the spill. BP estimated that the flow rates were between 210,000 gallons and 1.6 million gallons a day, the January 2011 report said.

As the spill grew into weeks and months, and soiled fishing grounds, beaches and coastal marshes, independent scientists questioned the official flow rates. Eventually, the federal government convened teams of government and independent scientists to determine how much oil leaked out of the well. They came up with an official estimate of about 2.4 million gallons of oil a day on average.

Expecting the truth from an oil company is like a hooker giving it to you for free. The two events never happen.

What? A corporation lied in order to the American public in order to protect its stockholders from fines and liability on a disaster they caused. Never saw that coming.

Betcha that old Dumbya is one of those stockholders, too.

More like Cheney. Haliburton was up to its neck in this one.

Unfortunately, projections are what the name implies....an educated guess. Was it bad? He11 yes it was bad. Will we ever know what the flow rate was? Never. Most oil wells never flow a constant rate, Oil, gas and produced water can vary greatly over a given time period.

Any oil spill is bad! The fact is BP was hiding the truth! Read the article!
      • Jason B 3 mths ago
Actually no, Frank, they were hiding an earlier estimate that was HYPOTHETICALLY worse than what ACTUALLY happened according to government agencies outside of BP.

@Jason B, reality here, BP had in an instant a preferred calculation which in fact took only into considerations the dynamics of liquid volume @ given pressure and orfice calculus. It in fact did nto take into considerations the effects of atmospheric pollutants nor did it take into effect the true readings of pressure at teh point of V1/P1 and was based only upon the assumed pressure and that, is a real big question to date as ti is already known that the macondo well posessed some fo the highest pressures ever experienced in DWD, potentially 3x what anything had actually ever been encountered. Just ask Bob Bea...

We need some elected officials that can be independent thinkers but who have dedication to America. None of thee republicans do nor does Obama and maybe some other democrats don't qualify either. We don't hear much disagreement from them. Michelle is the only one that ever says much. What ever happened to love for America and the belief that was once said," give me liberty or give me death" ? We need people like that again.

The only way the present politicians can qualify is if they do the right thing and open it all up. Starting with thei rmost powerful force of protecting the American who invented the device that actually closed the well down.

And those lying #$%$ Republicians wants the Real Americans to believe that the XP Pipeline they want to build from Canada to Port author for shipping to The Orient will not leak. This is oil Tar a low level oil that is comtinated with sulfur, lead, tin, Nickle and any other mineral that the oil came in contact during its travel to the surface. This is the same stuff that was used to waterproof ships. The same stuff that is used to make a tar like substance for black top. The same stuff that has a viscosity of jelly, mol#$%$es, or Sorgums. A liquid that requires it to be heated and mixed with other chemicals to flow in a pipe line. Can you just imagine the damage of 1 million gallons of this #$%$ on the ground or in the water system. No pipeline has ever created 10,000 jobs. Some one needs to teach those dam republicans math and how to stop lying.

Hey Yahoo. Fix the #$%$ thumbs up/down. Unless your trying to fix the results!

I would bet money ,marbles or chalk these scientists were not within 25% of the actual flow rates from the well. There are so many variables involved they could be off even 50%.Other than the unfortunate deaths of the crew members where is the damage? The one good thing about the leak was the number of people hired to clean up the little oil they could find, of which a good portion of oil that was there from years past because of the natural leaks thru the ocean floor which has been going on for years and will forever ! Shovel ready job folks, the only one!

Oh I am soooo shocked by this revelation!!!

Good news those...the Oil Across America pipeline will be able to pump billions of barrels of Canadian oil directly into the gulf of mexico. No need for an underwater leak. This will stimulate the economy by putting the shrimp boat captains back to work laying boom.

not only that, it will mechanically divide America and becoem a national security issue ( PRIME ON SPOT TARGET ).... the biggest reasons BO'B doesn't wanna see it and I agree. Let us be far more smart about it... rethink the distribution route(s) or not at all. Biggest reason they dont want refineries up north are the prevailing winds. The biggest reason they want to pipe a drain line from north to south is bulk sales. America seriously needs to remove itself from the petro grid... totally...

Veiling (if it is a word) is now the new euphemism for lying. I want to find the people writing the headlines and I want to.....well, let us just say that I might yell...quite a bit.

Seize ALL assets of British Petroleum on US soil, sell it to the highest bidder, and use the proceeds to pay off some of the damage claims.

Then... send the US Marshals into British Petroleum's US headquarters and PERP WALK everybody you can get your hands on.
    • Jason B  •  3 mths ago
What a ridiculously misleading headline. BP is "veiling" an EARLY ESTIMATE which turned out to be SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER THAN WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Just remember--BP is a foreign oil company--So is Shell. They have no allegence to the USA or any of it's property And why are the dam republicians still demanding corporate wellfair for these companies

      I'm still boycotting them...

BP is run by a bunch of arrogant Brits. They act like they know everything and demand "the best" service when you work for them. But when it comes to paying or taking their responsibility, they are the sorriest, greediest, and worst bunch of turds this world knows.
    • SeaCay  •  3 mths ago
It's a non-story. If BP's in-house worst case estimates were worse than the actual rates, why would they want to communicate that to the public? I'm not defending BP here but there are more dire things to reveal about them I'm sure than this drivel! Instead of going out and digging up facts, the press listens to the official proceedings and goes to work on how to make it sound like something it's not.
