Brain Scans Might Spot Autism as Early as 6 Months of Age

FRIDAY, Feb. 17 (HealthDay News) -- In children as young as 6 months old, changes in the brain that can lead to autism spectrum disorder may have already begun, preliminary research suggests.

Although early signs of autism, such as problems communicating and repetitive behaviors, can often be seen as early as 1 year, processes in the brain linked to communication are seemingly being altered months earlier, University of North Carolina researchers report.

"We know that there is evidence that autism affects the ability of different brain regions to communicate with each other. This study confirms that this atypical brain development begins very early in life," said study co-author Geri Dawson, the chief science officer at Autism Speaks.

"These findings raise the possibility of developing imaging markers that could detect risk for autism in advance of actual symptoms, and [to] begin treatment before symptoms begin," she said.

However, whether these brain changes occur in all autistic children isn't known, Dawson said. It is possible that the developmental problems of autism start even earlier, while in the womb, she said.

"One can imagine a day when you would use these imaging biomarkers to identify a young baby who is at risk and then provide them with early stimulation that could, hopefully, reduce or even prevent the onset of autism," Dawson said.

The report was published in the Feb. 17 online edition of the American Journal of Psychiatry.

For the study, a team led by Jason Wolff, a postdoctoral fellow at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities at the University of North Carolina, used MRI brain scans to look for early brain development in 92 infants.

These babies all had older sisters or brothers who had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, putting these infants a higher risk for developing the condition, the researchers noted.

The children underwent a special type of MRI called diffusion tensor imaging at 6 months, 1 year and 2 years of age. These repeated scans allowed the researchers to make three-dimensional pictures that show changes in "white matter." White matter is a part of the brain particularly embedded with nerve fibers that form information pathways between different areas of the brain.

Of the 28 infants who developed autism spectrum disorder, the scans showed different white matter development in 12 of the 15 brain pathways the researchers looked at, compared with 64 infants who did not go on to develop autism spectrum disorder.

At 6 months, these pathways were denser than usual in the babies who developed autism spectrum disorder, but on later scans development had slowed. At two years, the pathways were less dense than those of typical toddlers, the researchers found.

These differences suggest that white matter development is affected during early childhood, at the very time the brain is making and strengthening these vital connections, the investigators said.

"These brain changes appear to occur in advance of many symptoms," said Wolff. "Autism unfolds over early development, and this process may begin with basic differences in brain connections."

These early brain changes suggest the potential for biological signs for early detection of autism, Wolff said. "This is an initial study, but [it] holds promise for the development of early detection down the road," he added.

In addition, there is the potential for intervention that could disrupt the process that leads to autism, Wolff added. "We may be able to intervene before autism fully manifests," he said.

This study is part of a larger, ongoing multi-site study, Wolff said. "This is an initial sub-sample, and we are aiming to enroll about 400 infants at high risk for autism and 150 at low risk. Eventually we will be able to report on development of both brain and behavior in this group," he said.

Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental & behavioral pediatrics at the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, said one drawback to this approach is the number and cost of MRIs that would have to be done to identify babies at risk for autism.

"This is not a cheap or casual procedure," he said.

"However, this study suggests that there are roots to autism on a neurological level very early on," Adesman said.

In the future, the new research may have a clinical application, he said, but right now "this is not a diagnostic test and parents should not be asking for it."

Another expert, Dr. Robert F. Lopez-Alberola, an associate professor and chief of pediatric neurology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, added that while it has been known that there are changes in the brain in autism, "this is the first time we see this over time."

"From the clinical prescriptive, we may have identified a potential marker for earlier diagnosing and then to begin interventions that could make the symptoms less significant or even to prevent them," he said.

I was given vaccines and so were all the other kids I grew up with in the 70's yet I never knew anyone with Autism and hadn't even heard of it until the movie Rain Man. I have often wondered if it's prevalence today is due to society and how people's lifestyles have changed. Processed foods are more affordable than real food, pollution is choking us, many women are waiting until their mid to late 30's to have kids, many of whom have probably been on birth control pills for years, practically everyone is on some form of pharmaceutical grade medication... it makes me wonder if there is a connection.

The CDC says that there has been an actual increase, not just an increase in diagnoses, so there is clearly some environmental factor. The information available continues to rule out vaccines, but there are so many other potential environmental factors, there is no telling when we will discover what cause, or accumulation of causes, is to blame.

Finally, Macho, someone who suggests the same thing I've been suggesting. (see my other posts/replies after this one) I personally believe it's an environmental thing. Even a well meaning mother might be unaware of what she could be exposed to during pregancy through her food, toiletries, her home or workplace environment, etc.

Of course for most its the vaccines. The studies used to exonerate vaccines are so poorly designed and meaningless. Including the one a day ago about the mercury in kids urine. To properly #$%$ for metals a 24 hour urine must be collected, but in this studies case I guess it was to difficult for the idiot researchers.. What a load of crap. Don't forget that a 6 month old infant ,if the parents followed the CDC's recommended schedule has already recieved 15 injections with multiple pathogines and alumminum.mercury if a flu shot with Thermerisol was given already. It sickens me the way the public is manipulated and misinformed by not being told about other studies, scientist that have a different perspective concerning vaccine safty, or that vaccines are not tested the way they are given..Parents out their do your own research before following the CDC schedule. To ask questions about vaccines does not mean someone is antivaccine. That to many to soon are given ia common sense.Educate before you vaccinate and be sure to read the package inserts before letting your child get a vaccine, please.i wish i would have.

I have a 4 year old autistic son, we have been in therapy since about he was about 18 months old. He has made tremendous strides since he was a baby. Still non-verbal and very repeative.... Hopefully some day he will be like other children, but right now he is just himself.. Always happy and very loving! Wouldn't have him any other way... :)

My sister is autistic, but it was the recessive form, where they start out at the average range then around age 3 start going backwards in development. how do you track some thing at an early age that hasn't happened. and i don't think people should know that early, it would develop into, your kid is special and will need a lot of extra care that you my not be able to handle. these kids will end up for adoption due to parents felling like they can't handle it, especially if postpartum is involved. Heather is now 21 and my parents still can't handle it.

Being retarded or autistic is not special in any way, shape or form. I would
walk away from such a child, rather than spend the rest of my life in misery
        caring for a retarded idiot.
      • Annabeau 3 mths ago
Caroline, autistic is not the same are retarded. I have three boys on the spectrum, all of them geniuses and much better people than you seem to be. I'm sure there isn't an autistic or retarded child who would want to spend their life in misery living with you.
      • Annabeau 3 mths ago
Kacera, one of my boys got the regressive kind of autism but his hit at age two. I'm very sorry for the situation your family is in. Is there anyone to help?

I totally disagree with this.I have 2 autistic children both had brain scans and both of there brains are normal.
      • David 3 mths ago
I guess you messed em up afterwards then
      • Matt 3 mths ago
The experiment didn't use a normal brain scan like what kids can receive today; the article says that it was a special kind of scan called "diffusion tensor imaging", and they were focusing on looking at specific areas. So the features they're seeing are different from what would show up in the kind of scans that have been used by the general public.

My daughter had developed some of the behaviors as an infant, but I didn't know what was happening. This scan would have saved a lot of heartache for the both of us.

The scan is unproven. The American Medical Association is out for your dollars and not your health or anyone. Wake Up.

I can only speak from my own experience; my son, who is multiply handicapped, was autistic before he received his first immunization. A parent knows. I cannot blame anything or anyone for this. It is what it is.
      • AspieFarm 3 mths ago
Its not necessarily an either-or choice. Please consider that a person can be genetically predisposed to autism spectrum; have it, AND be more severely impacted w/ "symptoms" after being exposed to additional systemic toxicities, like the mercury-related preservative in many immunizations, eye drops, and allergy shots. A study on autistic people proved that they do not excrete heavy metal toxins at the same rate as "normies", thus they have a higher build-up in fatty tissues like the brain.

What is the immunization history of you and/or your husband? Did either of you serve in the Armed Forces? Have either of you been diagnosed with Lyme?

They need to be looking for the cause! Autism has increased by 600% in the past 20 years!!!
    • Debyduz  •  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  •  3 mths ago
I have a teenage son who has Asperger's he had symptoms since birth. so I know it is not vaccines. It is just a coincidence that the more glaring symptoms start at age 2 and that is when they get a lot of shots. Autistic children are also hypersensitive. There are also studies about the size of the brain. Hopefully more research will be done because the earlier it is identified the more success therapies will be in thelp Autistic children.

Sadly, there has been an overwhelming amount of trivializing autism. There are many degrees of autism but as with any childhood illness there is little consolation to the parents. For over thirty years now the autism rate has been skyrocketing. Yet, everywhere one turns there is a disclaimer against what could be the cause. Lets face it, what we breathe, eat, and are exposed to is hazardous due to the chemicals binding to our bodies. What is the shelf life of these chemicals ingested? Why is a loaf of bread okay today to be made up of hair (soylent hair)? Why is it okay that that same loaf of bread never grows moldy with age? Or for that matter, never ages? Why is it okay that the fillings in our teeth, the air that we breath, the food that we eat and the clothing, shampoo, makeup, toothpaste and our water is all chemically laced? The pharmaceuticals are too often pulled from public consumption as being too toxic for the human body. Despite their so-called product testings. Their disclaimers are enough to defy you to choose between the lesser of two evils. Arsenic in our juice? Dog food containing the recycled protein of euthanized animals? Anything from China is found sooner or later to be made from their bio-hazards. As parents, it is every one's dream to have a healthy baby. Yet, there is little being done other than a shell game regarding why our children are suffering so many devastating illnesses today. Remember this, it may not effect you now, but it will come to effect you later. Just go on with your simple lives, sheeple and never mind the rendering plant ahead. It doesn't effect you...for now.

it is disgusting how normal children are being diagnosed with autism my granddaughter had a early diagnosis because the mom was neglecting her and kept a pacifier in her mouth instead of letting her talk this whole science needs to step up my granddaughter is the smartest little angle ever if she was diagnosed properly the we would have understood it was neglect and not autism

we could also stop putting so many of those wonderful chemicals in our food, then maybe our children wouldn't hit puberty at age 8 or have other weird chemical imbalances.

Did anyone happen to notice the word "might" was use in the heading of this story. That would mean this is just another "theory" to add to all the other theories for the cause of Autism. To date there is no known cause or no known cure. Early childhood intervention with Applied Behavioral Analysist therapies goes a long way to help there children achieve their optimal level of development which greatly improves their ability to function in society. In todays world many with autism are able to hold jobs and live on their own with some supervision. Also it is believed that a significant number of autistic individuals are highly inteligent, Temple Grandin is one of these special people. She is an autistic woman who has been able to discribe to the world what it is like to be autistic. Some of her discriptions can
      be seen on You Tube.

I am a specialist in the subject and all I can say is that autism is a clinical diagnosis and not and image-based diagnosis , This article is totally wrong and only refers to incidental findings in the MRI scan that are seen in a specific population but are NOT diagnostic..
This is misleading and that is why the public gets confused about data gathered from research.More studies need to be done before they come up with this conclusion.

IMO, it’s a two-way street. My daughter was diagnosed with an absent corpus collasum (spell?) during the 20 week ultrasound. Now the doctors discussed all the possibilities of being unable to perform daily activities and not exceeding mentally past the 5th grade to living a normal life, but possibly being a little behind the curve in achieving her milestones. The only benefit to continuing with the scans was if they needed to induce my wife due to internal swelling of my daughter’s brain so they could monitor her in ICU. Outside of this there is nothing we can do…there is no cure so we just monitor her and watch how she develops. Knowing in advance actually added stress to my wife which is not a good thing during pregnancy. Again, IMO, advanced notice is only good if there is a cure or life threatening issue. If not, then knowing beforehand is to some degree pointless. I don’t know…maybe its just me, but it seems like the medical industry spends more time detecting versus curing…
