    Breast Augmentation Specialists in Virginia Comment on FDA Implant Registry

    Officials from the FDA recently said they would consider creating an implant registry that keeps track of the life of breast implants. Plastic surgeons Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger believe that the registry is a good idea.

    Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger, two breast augmentation surgeons in Virginia, believe that the recent news from the FDA regarding an implant registry that keeps track of the life of breast implants is a good idea. The two offer their commentary on the proposal, and weigh in on the implications of having such a registry both for doctors and patients.

    "I think the idea behind the implant registry is a good one, particularly because it can be useful for future studies about breast implants and their longevity," says Dr. Goldberg. "Although recording such information would be time consuming, the benefits that it could provide to patients and doctors make it worth that time commitment."

    The goal of the registry is to track any safety problems with breast implants; however, the FDA has stated that they recognize that silicone and saline breast implants are, in fact, safe. Rather than relying on company-sponsored studies by Allergan and Johnson & Johnson's Mentor unit (manufacturers of implants), this implant registry would keep track of any issues and would provide broader data, making it easier to identify potential problems or complications.

    "This registry would help both major breast implant companies improve their post-procedure tracking, and therefore be valuable for Virginia breast implant patients," explains Dr. Krieger. "I think it's great that the FDA is pushing for more information and data regarding breast implants. As the data accumulates, this information can be used to help potential breast augmentation patients decide if the procedure is a good fit for them."

    Dr. Goldberg adds, "Many of our plastic surgery patients in Virginia are curious about breast implants but want to know the implications. If this registry is in place, they can feel assured that thousands of breast implants are being monitored and that the emphasis on breast implant safety is continuing."

    While breast surgery is an important part of their practice, Drs. Goldberg and Krieger offer other surgical and non-surgical procedures at their practice, including tummy tuck, liposuction, and facial rejuvenation to help patients look and feel their best.
