Breast-feeding for 6 Months or More Protects Against Asthma

THURSDAY, July 21 (HealthDay News) -- Babies who are exclusively breast-fed for six months or more are less likely to develop symptoms of asthma in early childhood, new research suggests.

Although previous studies have found a link between breast-feeding and a reduced risk for childhood asthma, this study also found the likelihood of developing asthma is also affected by how long a child is breast-fed. For instance, children who are breast-feed for a shorter length of time, or not exclusively, are more likely to experience asthma-related symptoms by the time they are 4.

Dutch researchers compiled information on how more than 5,000 children were fed during their first year of life. Specifically, they wanted to know if the children were breast-fed, and if so, for how long. The researchers also recorded if and when any other milk or solids were introduced.

The researchers examined the children each year until they turned 4 to check for any asthma-related symptoms.

The study, published online in the European Respiratory Journal, found that children who had never been breast-fed had an increased risk of wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough and persistent phlegm during the first four years of life, compared to children who were breast-fed for more than six months.

In fact, children who were never breast-fed were up to 1.5 times more likely to develop wheezing and persistent phlegm.

Meanwhile, the children who were fed other milk or solids in addition to breast milk during the first four months of life were also more likely to experience wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough and persistent phlegm during the first four years of life than children who were exclusively breast-fed for their first four months.

"The link of duration and exclusiveness of breast-feeding with asthma-related symptoms during the first four years was independent of infectious and [allergic diseases associated with an inherited predisposition to them]. These results support current health policy strategies that promote exclusive breast-feeding for six months in industrialized countries," study author Dr Agnes Sonnenschein-van der Voort, a researcher at Generation R, Erasmus Medical Center in The Netherlands, said in a news release from the European Lung Association.

The study authors noted that more research in needed to explore the protective effect of breast-feeding on the various types of asthma in later life.

My brother and I were never breast fed, and at ages 40 and 42 respectively, we don't have any asthma or any allergies. I don't think there is a connection-- although I am all for breastfeeding.

And people wonder why we fall behind in science...with a sample size of one (family) containing two data points -- you want to make a statement that of all the world's population you only need you and your brother to represent if there is a link?

I don't know which is greater, your ignorance or your arrogance!

i'm 64, still on the titty and no asthma, but it made me far sighted in one eye and near sighted in the other, trying to watch both of them

So, I've looked at all of your comments, and what I found is a common pattern: you think that one example (such as yourself) represents society as a whole. WRONG. This is a new study, and what a REAL study does is to analyze enough individuals to find the TRUTH. That is what scientific studies are about--not trends, not testimonials, not individual stories--because those can vary from one person to the next due to a variety of reasons. They look at a population--then make conclusions from that. It could take years to make a study out of that, so for those of you who pooh-pooh the study, and say "Well duh we already knew that"---you were probably basing that on your own point of view and your own anecdotal evidence.

Bah, if you need serious then it is all just a roll of the genetic dice, mix in a dash of environmental toxins and Bam, asthma and allergies. Now where is that research grant?

hahahaha, I find this story amusing! My mom breastfed me until I was a year, I have had asthma since I was a baby!

It's interesting also because they don't discuss the incidence of asthma or allergies in the mothers. As antibodies are passed in breastmilk, it would follow that allergies (since they usually involve antibodies) could be passed on also. I know a child that was breastfed until 3. Her mom has significant allergies and the child has had numerous issues (allergy induced asthma) too. She was also very overly cautious about introducing milk and other foods that are considered allergenic. It all seemed to have the opposite effect in their case. Perhaps in these types of cases there is the opposite effect- it would actually raise the child's risk. They say that those issues were independant in this study but it doesn't address at all how they controlled for those things. They also don't mention controlling for any kind of environmental toxins (in general or those that may be passed on in milk), that has to have a major effect. Allergies and asthma seem to be the product of our modern society and it's difficult to believe that it is natural or that anyone is actually predisposed to develop them.

Allergies and asthma might be more linked to genetics than breast feeding, or possibly both. Science is far better than ignorance (and a study of thousands is much more signifcant that anyone's single case history), but science is always a work in progress too.

LOL - I didn't mean what I posted to be a for or against breastfeeding type thing. I just found the story amusing while I read it - because of my lifetime of asthma and all. I seriously think that it involves a lot more than just breastfeeding. Breast is best isn't always the truth. Some people can't breastfeed due to health problems. I am all for breastfeeding though. It's cheaper and easier! I think the comments on this one are hilarious too. It is either joking or serious people trying to convince everyone of their side and science - love it!

Children who grow up on farms have a lower incidence of asthma and allergies. So just clean less.
      • AYahooUser 10 mths ago
your 'just clean less' could easily be replaced with:
        - just work 3X harder
        - just consume fewer processed foods
        - just consume fewer preservatives

The list goes on and on. Living on a farm is far different than not having a clean house. Maybe if you took a step back away from the keyboard and did a little bit of hard work, you'd understand.

I'm 42 and have asthma,,,is it too late for this to help me??? any ladies want to volunteer in the study to find out???lol

For the most part, I agree. My sisters were breastfed, and I wasn't. I have asthma, and they don't.
    • Kathy  •  10 mths ago
I don't have asthma, but I was a breast-fed baby and have fought allergies all of my life, from 20 years old til present age of 60.

I'd like to know the percentage of adults who were nursed in infancy for that long and developed adult-onset allergy induced asthma. And the female to male ration since it's said that more adult-onset asthma and allergies patients are women. And what amount of nursing was done. I'm the only one between my siblings and I to develop adult-onset asthma. We were all nursed for a couple or so months.

To make light of breast feeding is so lame. All these new mama's on welfare could take a lesson, it does not cost nearly as much to breast feed and children are usually healthier and it is so much easier than the formula route, the bottles, the cost. And that 2 am feeding, grab the kid start nursing and sit aback and relaax.

I knew someone that was breastfed exclusively after being born again. Then a scandal forced him to resign as the head of "Joy, Joy, Joy Ministries, inc." Apparently his wet nurse went to the tabloids after he gave her a shabby Christmas bonus.
