COMMENTARY | The four remaining GOP presidential candidates debated in Tampa, Fla., on Monday night on NBC, moderated by the "NBC Nightly News" grandstanding anchor Brian Williams. This spectacle was mostly a dialogue between former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. During the first part of the debate, Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum were basically left out. BuzzFeed reported Paul and Santorum spoke less than five minutes for the first one-third of the program.

This program was a massive disgrace. Williams should be ashamed of himself for generally excluding Santorum and Paul. If these debates aren't going to strive to give equal time to the participants, why do the organizers even bother to invite those who they are going to disrespect?

According to The Hill, during the first 40 minutes, Paul only got to speak once and Santorum got to talk twice. Watching the first part of the debate made me feel very uncomfortable because I kept thinking about how Paul and Santorum must've been feeling being left out and having to stand and listen to long blocks of dialogue between Romney and Gingrich. They traded barbs over things like the former's charge of the latter being involved in "influence peddling," as reported by ABC News.

This debate lasted just less than 100 minutes, as reported by USA Today but when factoring in the irritating commercial breaks, it was even less. This debate was a wasted opportunity, but Santorum and Paul didn't protest, acting very polite despite being disrespected by Williams.

Yet the establishment media has been signaling the GOP race is down to two candidates, for on Sunday, the host of "Face the Nation," Bob Schieffer, called for a one-hour debate between just Gingrich and Romney, according to HuffPost Media.

I am tired of debate moderators who do not strive to let everyone have as close to equal time as possible. The establishment TV media continues to try to influence how the public will vote, especially when they deny equal time to all the debate candidates.

The public shouldn't take the bait, but instead be discerning and be informed outside of prime time, because an informed citizen is the biggest deterrent against the biased, scheming talking heads on TV like Williams.

They always, always put Paul on the end...easier to leave him out. He actually had to ask to speak on abortion when they were going to another subject, after everyone had spoken. Paul said, "After all, I am a doctor." I think they should line the people up in ABC order and let them all have input on all the subjects.

These "debates" don't follow the rules of debating - they've deteriorated into yellfests where candidates repeat talking points over and over and say nasty, inaccurate things. Who's responsible? The moderators (and the handlers who get together with the moderators) to make the "rules". Too bad.

Why don't they ever have a true debate? One in which there are time limits and specific points, rather than loose topics and uncontrolled rambling? You know, like high school kids do?

I agree. The so called mainstream media seems to want this mess boiled down to Mitt vs Newt. It is disgusting. People who want to really know what is going on do not even waste their time anymore with the "news" reports of the so called mainstream media. Paul and Santorum did get the shaft.

How hard would it be to put the four of them in four separate rooms, sound proofed of course, and ask each of them 25 questions about the actuality of what they would do to fix specific problems or accomplish specific goals if they were elected. These questions being a compilation of the most asked questions that most Americans would like answered and derived from a computer write in campaign of at least two weeks? Give each candidate a maximum of 75 seconds to answer each one and ask all the candidates all the questions in a rolling format.
Equal time---equal questioning----equal footing. No bias.------And no one would agree to it.Sorry I brought it up.

Brian Williams sucked as moderator for the debate last night. Every question he asked was never answered by either Romney or #$%$ Gingrich. What a waste of time, worst debate ever!

I'm not a supporter of Paul or Santorum, but even I was wondering if they had stepped out for coffee. Not only were they not getting any questions, the camera angles were overwhelmingly only of Mitt and Newt. I can understand the problems with wide shots when there were 7 on the stage. You pull back to get them all in, they become so small you can't tell who is who, but it was only 4 guys this time. There was no excuse from excluding them verbally AND visually. NBC's coverage was totally disgraceful!

This is just one of many ways the media influences votes. The other candidates are getting the best press they can buy while they take the camera off Ron Paul etc and basically act like he's not there or not worth listening to. Yet, these (a) holes talk about their "journalistic professionalism and integrity" and act like THEY are the keepers of the First Amendment. Not impartial at all......

It's disrespectful to us, the voters, as well. We have the right to hear from all of the candidates. I want to hear them. All of them. Even the ones I don't like. I'll make my own choice.

The networks should not be allowed to mediate the debates. They should just be contracted with to broadcast them. The questions should come from the audience.

Whatever your opinion on Santorum and Paul might be, the idea of the media selectively marginalizing candidates for president is undemocratic at best.

I;m not a big R. Paul supporter, but I recognize him as the one of a very few candidates who really believes - and sticks - to an interesting philosophy. The others strike me as unbelievably "fake" the moment they open their mouths.

The men who own our politicians, also own our media. Money equals power, and they have unlimited money.

You are being told who to vote for by the Mainstream Media. They will give you your choices and you will just have to go along with it or too bad! This country is screwed!

Well said! NBC is an absolute joke! If you look at the comments on its facebook page, everyone agrees!!

Totally agree except for the point that Williams did not take charge either. Disgraceful show.

Not only did Ron Paul only get one question in the first 40 minutes but it was only a question to state "your not going to win, when will you get behind Romney or Gingrich". So he gets one question and its an insult that they have asked him 50 times before. My vote is for Ron Paul all the way. The goal with these attacks and they have done it all along is to marginalize him and its self profiling because many want to vote for who they think is a winner even if they don't like the candidate. So sad the shills the media has become.

In the past six months, I have lost all respect for Bob Schieffer. I used to think he was a journalist with integrity, but he's shown himself to be a shill with pretend integrity as his schtick. Sad way to close out a career, Bob.

I was on the fence until last night but after watching those bozos, I think I can actualy support Ron Paul. He didn't have to say anything, the others proved how unqualified they are.
