A wedding favor has become an essential part of wedding planning for many brides but it is also a stressful element of the wedding-planning—what small token can a bride and groom give that is (a) a token of thanks, (b) a memento of their wedding day, (c) affordable, and (d) not an item to be immediately thrown in the trash?
Ever the problem-solver, Roth sought to consider thoughtful and—most importantly—meaningful wedding favors that brides and grooms might want to consider for their wedding day.
“A meaningful wedding favor must display certain characteristics,” says Roth. “It must say something about the couple as a unit and also display gratitude to the guests for being a part of their special day. I’m afraid to say that a box of after-dinner mints just won’t cut it anymore! But that said, a wedding budget is a huge part of the planning and is it wise to spend a large percentage of the budget on gifts for the guests? I think not.”

1. The Country-Bumpkins
“One of my favorite wedding favors ever,” recalls Roth, “was at a country wedding I attended a couple of years ago. Both bride and groom had grown up on farms picking fruits, collecting eggs and learning to shoot prey. Though both came from affluent families, the bride and groom opted to show their thanks to guests via a jar of homemade jam, stewed and jarred by them. That the happy couple chose to take time out of their hectic work and wedding-planning schedules to do something so special for their guests was the ultimate.”
Not a country bumpkin? No worries. The idea of an artisanal treat can be made personal via a box of home-baked cookies, a tin of hand-rolled truffles… You get the picture.
2. The City Slickers
“I once attended a fabulous wedding in the City where in lieu of a traditional wedding favor, the couple hired a tour bus,” says Roth. “At the end of the wedding each and every guest was handed a ticket to board the bus the following day. What a fabulous way to thank guests who had travelled in from all over the world!”
Not a city slicker? Interpret the idea. A wedding favor traditionally sets a couple back a minimum of $5/ head and with a guest list that runs into the hundreds, that can be an awful lot of change taken from your budget. By hiring the city tour bus for private use, this clever couple capped their expense.
3. The Movie Junkies
Everyone has a pair of film aficionados in their repertoire of friends. One savvy couple Roth met used this as the inspiration for their favor… With a movie-theater gift card.
Not a movie junkie? Not a problem. Again, it’s all about re-interpreting the concept to your spouse-to-be and you, whether it’s fashion, music or sports that float your boat.
4. The Destination Wed-ders
One lucky couple Roth had the privilege of getting to know had opted for a destination wedding in a warmer clime. As a nod to the setting—and the heat—the happy couple chose to favor their guests with a screen-printed fan, while at the cocktail reception parasols were handed out.
Not getting married in the heat? Well, if snow is the order of the wedding-day for a ski-savvy couple, why not opt for a custom-printed mug of hot cocoa instead?
5. It’s All in the Family
Oftentimes a family has a business or something they are renowned for. “I once had a client whose family owned a famous perfumery in Manhattan,” recalls Roth. “As a wedding favor to their guests, the bride’s family therefore opted to gift a hand-crafted, scented candle to their guests.”
Not in the perfume business? Never fear! Again, it’s all about interpretation. For example, if a family is music-centric, a CD of the wedding band’s playlist is a fabulous idea.
