However, the expansion in consumer demand for these anti-ageing treatments has led to a ‘gold-rush’ of new practitioners, keen to jump on the band-wagon with minimal training and little or no medical background, potentially putting patients’ health at risk as well as their appearance.
Bristol cosmetic doctor, Dr John Quinn, has specialised in Medical Aesthetics since 2005 and has treated literally thousands of patients. He explains: “Anti-wrinkle injections are very effective in turning back the clock. However, they are based on powerful prescription medicines. The “Introduction to Medical Aesthetics” 2-day intensive course is offered to Doctors, Dentists and Nurse Prescribers as a foundation to aesthetic medicine. With a maximum of 5 delegates, there is plenty of one-to-one attention to skill development and practical time; as well as vital grounding in facial anatomy and cosmetic techniques.
After completion of this course, candidates can choose to further their skills. For example, the latest course covers new Juvederm® Voluma® – a new ‘deep filler’ product containing local anaesthetic which enables practitioners to restore lost facial volume. This product has only just been launched, but Dr Quinn is one of the first Doctors to receive it, being a local country ambassador for Allergan, the company that manufactures Juvederm®; as well as an accredited Allergan Centre of Training.
Dr Quinn says “I am really passionate about getting great results for my patients and am keen to share my knowledge with other medical practitioners. With good training and ongoing practice, standards in the cosmetic treatments will rise.”
“I do see patients that have been disappointed with results elsewhere and it saddens me to see it. It is a careful balance between the “frozen” over-done look and treatment which is ineffective. However, understanding of fine facial anatomy combined with practical skills should mean that as an industry we are able to achieve better and better results for our patients.”
Dr John Quinn is fully registered with the General Medical Council and has been a GP in Bristol since 2004. He has been working in cosmetic medicine for over 6 years and has performed thousands of procedures. He is a full member of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors.
