Britain has hottest October day on record

LONDON (AP) — Britain has experienced the hottest October day on record.

National weather service the Met Office says Saturday's temperature reached 85.8 F (29.9 C) at Gravesend in southeast England.

That is the highest October temperature since records began a century ago, beating the previous high of 84.9 F (29.4 C) reached on Oct. 4, 1985.

The average maximum temperature for early October is about 59 F (15 C).

After a cool and wet summer, much of Britain has been basking in several days of sun and unseasonably high temperatures. Forecasters say cooler temperatures should return by Tuesday.

        I agree, Texas deserves it.

Oh god. 86 degrees is basically a cold front in Texas. The summer average is 105.
      • frosty 7 mths ago
86 might be what we get at night, if we are lucky, most of the time at night was still in the 90's

0.7 degree difference from the record set in 1985, crank up the presses, call the politicians and let's see if we can get more money!!!

That's nothing. Several cities in the USA were hotter all summer !

I'm not saying this is due to global warming - anyone with a brain knows there's no harm in reducing pollution.

My concern is whether it's already too late. We may already be at the time to think about how to react to climate change vs. preventing it.

We are heading into a mini ice age. You won't like that any better and it is another act of nature no one can do anything about including the liberal screamers and scamers. Let's see how AlGore makes a fortune on this!

Actually there is. The ecomonic fallout from chasing perfection at any cost, and often red herrings, closes factories, power plants, and mines among other enterprises includes slashing jobs and raising the cost of living. The most significant problem with EPA judgements is that they cannot, by law, consider the cost benefit trade off in issuing regulations. If they could, and would, I think we would have a far more reasonable approach to pollution. Don't forget only 40 years ago the threat was global cooling. We do not know where climate is headed or why.

Where were they getting the tempurature a century ago? Grandpa's barn?

Thermometers have been around for a few hundred years, thanks to those darn scientists.
      • pynaetlb 7 mths ago
They didn't have to get them, the warming scientists are so smart they were able to make them up.

I think it's more El Nino then global warming at this point. However, you can't rule out global warming, with the polar ice caps melting, and eco systems like Texas and Africa going through major droughts.

Why is this news? We had a hottest September day on record last month where I live, no one made a big deal of that. Big woot.
    • marvin  •  7 mths ago

It's getting warmer in England. Just like it was in the 12th century. Good, we're finally getting out of this unusually cold weather that the earth has been having.
    • Doggoneit!  •  7 mths ago
Summers in Georgia, USA seem to be getting warmer and winters seem to be getting colder. Strange climate changes. Don't know if it is due to pollution and global warming or if it is historically cyclical. Hmmmmm. But what I DO know is that my heating and AC costs keep going up.

When it's cold here in the US and Hot there in the UK ( all being in the same hemisphere ) it seems the earths wobble may be exagerated some. Maybe we can ask one of NASA's astrobiologist what is going on. Or we can look at the websites that are sponsored by our government ( covertly ) to give us the truth in an indirect manner. If our government told us directly what was going on the #$%$ would hit the fan. I live in the south, and when there is snow forecast it looks like a total disaster on the bread and milk isles of the grocery stores. People need to make informed decissions about what is best for them and their families. Listen to what people have to say. Nomatter how crazy it all sounds just remember; you live on a tiny piece of dust that floats around in an infinite universe.
