The stage musical adaptation of Tuck Everlasting, based on Natalie Babbitt's popular 1975 children's novel, will have its pre-Broadway world premiere at Boston's Colonial Theatre in June 2013, producers announced March 5.
Tony Award-winning Book of Mormon director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw will stage the musical about a young a girl who befriends a unique family that has gained eternal life by drinking from a spring that flows from a tree in the woods.
Tuck Everlasting has a score by Burnt Part Boys songwriters Chris Miller (music) and Nathan Tysen (lyrics) and a book by Tony Award-nominated playwright Claudia Shear (Dirty Blonde). Nicholaw also oversaw two New York workshops of the property last year.
Casting and a production team will be announced at a later date.
Broadway Across America (John Gore, Thomas B. McGrath, Beth Williams), Howard Kagan and Barry Brown produce Tuck Everlasting.
A December reading of the musical featured Carolee Carmello, Michael Park, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, Rozi Baker, Fred Applegate, Marylouise Burke, Bob Fitch, Matt Shingledecker, Michael Wartella and Valerie Wright. Carmello, Keenan-Bolger, Burke, Baker and Applegate also took part in an April 2011 presentation of Tuck Everlasting.
According to the authors, "Good girl Winnie Foster's world has been safely contained behind the picket fence that surrounds the house she shares with her mother and grandmother. Yearning to break free, Winnie runs deep into the woods behind their house where she discovers the Tuck family and the secret they’ve been keeping. That secret sets Winnie and the Tucks out on an adventure that will test what they believe and challenge them to truly be alive, now and forever."
