Brooks looks to get money back from Okla. hospital

CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) — A jury has been chosen to hear country music star Garth Brooks' claim that an Oklahoma hospital failed to honor his late mother after he gave it a half-million dollars.

Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital of Yukon said Tuesday it had discussions with Brooks over how to use the $500,000 gift but talks broke down before any agreement was reached. It also said Brooks donated the money with no strings attached.

Brooks says the hospital showed him mock-ups of buildings bearing Colleen Brooks' name but didn't follow up. He is asking that his money be returned.

Many of the potential jurors said they were fans of Brooks or his wife, Trisha Yearwood, but they thought they could still consider the case fairly.

Opening statements are set for Wednesday.

I don't buy the hospital's story. NOBODY gives ANYBODY $500K for nothing ...

Hospital admins are skum (sic for yahoo censors). I know of one hospital chief who had a hot tub in his office.

so they couldn't avoid court by slapping her name on the building , so I wonder how much the lawyers are going to make compared to a 100 dollar plaque

It's the American way!!! Ya gotta love it. Atta boy Garth, see to it that the top 1% get their money.

      And the thunder rolls.

If the hospital reneged on the condition of the donation, they should be held accountable. This is the real world, there is no free lunch!

When you're donating that amount of money, that's not something you "misunderstand". And that is a lovely tribute by Garth to his mama: the hospital needs to come through and name a wing after the woman. I don't think for a minute the donation was unconditional. Integris didn't want to give the money back, and didn't want to tell him it was reneging. Weasels.

I'd want something to show for that kind money too. They probably used it to pay bonuses to their CEOs.

I don't see the issue, Douglas. It's not like he wanted his name on the building; it was a donation to honor his late mother. What is so wrong with setting a condition for a half million dollar donation?

Dear Brent - he isn't asking for something named after him - it was a memorial for his mother -- and people with a lot less money than Garth make donations in the name of a loved one. I seriously doubt Garth needs the money, so wouldn't lie about it or misunderstand. Hospital just hasn't come through with it's building plans (2005?) you'd think that would be long enough!

The Hospital will spend more in Lawyer fee's to fight this. I see a name going up real quick.

This donation was publicly knowledge since it was made. He made it known that the Hospital was to name a building after his mother for the money. So there is not anonymous and unconditional. Hospital will loose and Brooks will get his money back.

They'll probably just name a building after her. Brass plaques are fairly cheap.

Give the money back to Garth!

Not all hospitals are blood sucking leeches as many of them are non-profit. I think Integris is a non-profit so I can't even begin to know what their motivation is for not following through on Brook's request to honor his mother. I suggest Integris better get their act in gear or they are going to lose. Brooks is a sincere, honest man and if he says that was the deal, then that was the deal.

no profit hospital are not "not profit" they are allowed to make a certain percentage of profit though very small

As someone who has worked in both for profit and non-profit hospitals I can tell you the main difference is the non-profits are managed with little or no accountability, which is easy when you are spending someone else's money. This hospital reeks of the entitlement mentality of the typical non-profit hospital management. Oh and make no mistake about it although they are non-profit, their management is paid very well.

There is no such thing as a non profit hospital!!! Have you checked your Medicare claims bill or insurance bill. They charge a fortune for a bandaid for God's sake.

Bad PR for the hospital. But Garth trusted them too much. Should have had a simple written agreement detailing where the money would be spent.

The hospital took the money and how hard would it have been to put the woman's name on a building...

There has to be some recorded documents like E-Mails, letters, memo's, wittnesses confirming any committment from the hospital, this goes to show how we as a society trust people and one another into todays world, oh well , sign of the times.

Why did he give the money without an agreement?
      • CELTICPRINCE 4 mths ago
IF HE DIDN'T HAVE AN AGREEMENT SIGNED BY A JUDGE AND NOTERIZED AN FILED WITH THE COURT, HE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET HIS MONEY BACK! ONT HE OTHER HAND, IF THEY ARE SOME CREDIBLE WITNESSES THAT WILL TESTIFY IN COURT THAT THEY HEARD THE HOSPITAL REPRESENTIVE SAY OR AGREE TO PUT HIS MOTHERS NAME ON THE HOSPITAL, THEN , THEY MIGHT HAVE TO REPAY THE MONEY. IF IT IS A CASE OF HE SAID, SHE SAID, LEAGELLY, HE MAY NOT GET HIS MONEY BACK! BUT SINCE HE IS WHO HE IS, HE MAY VERY WELL GET IT BACK HAHAHA! THERES AN OLD SAYIN, JUSTICE IS BLIND, WELL I;'M HERE TO TELL U THAT THAT IS #$%$ HAHAHA
    • just me  •  4 mths ago
Gettum Garth! They didn't have any problem taking your money/ you make #$%$ sure you hold them to their promise!

Don't show us the money, show us the papers which accompanied the money. I'm betting that Garth Brooks didn't just give the $$
'with no strings attached'. How else would the hospital get publicity if it wasn't able to use Garth Brooks name as the donor?

Is this the same guy who sang "unanswered prayers" and then divorced his wife?
