Brooks' suit against Okla. hospital goes to trial

CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) — Country music star Garth Brooks is suing an Oklahoma hospital that he says reneged on a promise to name a building after his late mother in exchange for a $500,000 donation.

Brooks' lawsuit against Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon seeks the return of the December 2005 donation. The trial at the Rogers County District Court begins Tuesday.

Brooks says hospital officials showed him mock-ups of buildings bearing Colleen Brooks' name and told him his donation was earmarked for such a project.

The hospital denies any wrongdoing and in court filings says Brooks' donation was "anonymous and unconditional."

Garth is a very Genorous Unselfish Man. If it prove's out in Court he was decieved and lead to believe that his wishes would take place, I say they should Pony up!

$500,000 is a lot of money. They should honor his mother for such a gracious gift...He has never been one of my favorite singers (I do like some of his music), but I don't think a hospital should take advantage of such a gift.

It is indeed a lot of money, but it's a pretty small drop in the bucket in terms of the total cost of a hospital building. I believe the hospital's expansion/renovation project is in the $27 million range, which likely doesn't even include adding a building. The C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, a new building which opened last month and is part of the University of Michigan, got an initial $25 million from the C.S. Mott Foundation, and probably more later.

My bad...I am not financially secure and maybe I look at gifts from ppl differently. When someone does something for you no matter what, you should be thankful. I go out of my way for others and never expect anything in return.. You are right...He should not expect anything in return.

Kind of a cheap shot by the hospital putting her name on the mock-ups---they knew what they were doing----he should have seen it coming though

You just can't trust people any more, especially when you give them money.

Hospitals are "for profit" businesses that can and do charge markups that would result in criminal charges in any other industry. Garth get your money back (hopefully including attorney fees) and donate it to a cause that appreciates your help.
If anyone doubts the hospital's motivation is anything other then greed, ask yourself who's paying the hospital's attorneys.

Don't blame ya Garth; just don't let the lawyer fees come to more then the original donation.

You'd think by now he would have learned that anything and everything to do with money needs to be in the form of a contract agreement. Sheesh.

The hospital will end up spending his donation on attorney fees. Does he have the agreement in writing? However name is on the building must have made a much larger donation

Here's betting that the lawyers involved end up costing more than the total of the donation.

My God, Grow up people ! Cut with the idiotic remarks and cruel comments. Have you ever heard of PHILANTROPY ? That's what rich folks who donate money for worthy projects do, and in return their name is attached to the project in some manner. That's what Garth did here, and the hospital didn't respond in kind.

Hospitals do some wonderous work. In this case however, it sounds as though a board of directors is being petty and spiteful. In this case, they should be forced to return the money...with interest. Oh, and pay the court costs, too. Just as a reminder of what it can cost to be stupid in the face of earnest generousity.

I don't know much about Mr Brooks. Is his mother deceased? Usually that is what I have seen when it comes to naming wings of buildings, etc. "In memory of______"

If that was the arrangement, and the Hospltal reneged, then they should return the money, or rename the building.
    • LonnieX  •  Tampa, Florida  •  4 mths ago
hmm... people don't seem to understand.. this is nothing new with Brooks (giving money to a hospital/university to build a wing and have it named for you or your family)--why do you think your local library, hospital, church has a building or wing named after "that great local.."? It's because that family made a large "donation." If the hospital took his money and didn't build the building, they broke the agreement and should give back the "donation." PERIOD
