Brown to seek sweeping Calif. pension rollbacks

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown is set to propose sweeping rollbacks to public employee pension benefits, including raising the retirement age to 67 for new employees who are not public safety workers and requiring employees to pay more toward their retirement and health care.

A draft proposal of the plan obtained by The Associated Press late Wednesday says the governor will also propose a mandatory "hybrid" system in which future retirees would get their retirement from a guaranteed benefit as well as a 401(k)-style plan subject to market whims.

The plan being unveiled Thursday also would end so-called pension "spiking" that lets employees boost their payouts by including overtime and other benefits, and end the practice of buying additional service credits.

The administration estimates its proposal would save about $900 million annually.

If Brown sits by and does nothing, the Republicans accuse him and the libs of catering to the unions. He makes cuts in the midst of a budget crisis, and now they're accusing the libs of hypocrisy and flip-flopping. No matter what Brown does (and even if he manages to solve this), the Republicans will somehow politicize the issue. Pretty soon they'll also be saying that the Democrats are "anti-law enforcement" in addition to their usual crap that they're anti-military and unpatriotic. Just wait and see.

And speaking of that...for those of you who think it's so easy to just sign on the dotted line and cut public pensions, why don't you run for office and try standing in front of a microphone (in this post 9/11 world) and say that firefighters and police officers are overpaid? Let me know how it goes.

This goes out to all you geniuses who think that we can wipe out our entire $15 trillion national debt simply by ending the war and having Obama, Biden and Congress take a pay cut.

Corruption is alive and well in Fresno County. A prime example is county schools chief Larry Powell. His PR staff have come up with a "fairy tale" that he is giving the county office of education an $830,000 salary savings gift to justify his $32,000 "double dipping" raise in salary and benefits and the local and national media are buying into it. Powell's current 1099 form records close to $300,000.

They should cut back on the giveaway to illegals.
      • GH 7 mths ago
The "illegals" don't get giveaways. What they get is low-paying, dificult jobs that you are too fat and lazy to do.

Pretty soon, the retirement age will be 67 anyway. Its coming, just watch and see.
      • Dean 7 mths ago
Well, since the life expectancy is increasing, it only makes sense that the retirement age should go up too. Just like more and more people are becoming first-time parents in their 30's rather than their 20's. Life expectancy.

California does not have money to support their workers ' retirement but it has money to support illegal immigrants and their tuition .
      • SHADOWRUN 7 mths ago
Giving to illegals is more important then helping Americans because these people will remember who helped them when the democrats give them all amnesty.
      • day 7 mths ago
And don't forget... It caters to the poor!!!

The democrats are primarily the ones responsible for the public retirements being out of line.

Hey Jerry, how about that bill you just signed giving illegals free grants and college tuition, how many billions is that going to cost us? How about ending all the restrictions on businesses and people who want to start a business so you can entice work growth in this state again. How about stop enticing all the illegal to come to this state with all the handout we give, and kick everybody off of welfare who has been on it over two years, or who continues to have children while on it, which is being paid for by all the hard working, tax paying citizens of this state.

Lets stop penalizing all the hard working legal citizens of this great state and start using common sense.

Being a police officer, I do pay a hundred percent of my pension, which is fifteen percent, into my cities retirement fund.
    • Marty  •  7 mths ago
Hey, Moonbeam! Kick the illegals out of your state and see how much money you save!
    • SA  •  7 mths ago
This is 100% Grey Davis' fault who bent California over and served us up to the unions for their endorsements.
    • EARTH  •  7 mths ago
Round up illegals, put them in camps like in Arizona. Work them in the fields, no work, no eat. Allow Mexico to pay 10 barrels of oil per illegal, for cost of shipping them back home.
    • joe joe  •  Lima, United States  •  7 mths ago
If this were Ohio or Wisconsin the media and the unions would be out in full force calling for heads to roll. But we'll see what kind of attention this gets considering it's a Democrat who's waking up to reality.
    • American Citizen  •  7 mths ago
Libbies argue that ILLEGAL aliens don't put a drain on the economy, how come the state with the MOST ILLEGAL aliens is also the state with the LARGEST DEBT???
    • Mike  •  7 mths ago
Where is the big fat D for demorat next to Jerry Browns name? They put a big old R next to all the Republicans. Guess they just don't want the people to know he's a demorat. Thats right demorats Jerry is your boy, a fellow demorat. Whats he doing? He is taking the a lead from Gov. Scott Walker-R Wisconsin. Everything he is doing is thesame as what Walker did in WI except Browns plan goes further. Get your protest signs out demorats and head to the Capitol building! Whats that? Your not going to protest because you think he has a good plan because he's a fellow demorat. Just admit it demorats, after you come in and burn down the bank accounts for your State it takes a Republicans plan to fix it!
    • L S  •  7 mths ago
So since he is a democrat/liberal this is not anti-union like those big bad heartless republicans are doing in other states and municipalities that are broke in large part due to the pension excesses of government union workers. LOL
    • Lawrence  •  7 mths ago
what can i say! the people of Calif. voted him in , they like supporting illegals r they would n have
have voted this trash into office
    • Snady  •  7 mths ago
I knew good ole Jerry would think of a way to pay for the free tuition for illegals. A dream for illegals, a nightmare for the rest of us.
    • John  •  7 mths ago
we have to be realistic, Americans have been living beyond their means, and borrowing trillions of $$$$,

Yep, that Dream Act is kinda pricey.
    • Timothy  •  San Luis Obispo, United States  •  7 mths ago
To be honest, if a republican governor proposed doing this, democrats would be marching in the streets, Unions would be calling the masses together for a massive protest, and MSNBC would be there blaming Bush. Amazing
