Brownback Tweeter's High School Classmates Are Bullying Her

Brownback Tweeter's High School Classmates Are Bullying Her

Though much of the country came to the defense of Emma Sullivan, the Kansas high school student who got into a very public Twitter spat with Gov. Sam Brownback this week, her high school classmates haven't been quite as supportive. In fact, they've bullied her into staying home from school on Tuesday, she tells Politico. Sullivan declined her principal's request that she write a letter apologizing to the governor for writing a rude tweet after Brownback's office contacted the school. A lot of people defended her on the web, and even Brownback said yesterday that his staff overreacted when they came across her tweet, "#heblowsalot." Yet -- and we have to say this feels like a first in the politics of high school -- Politico's Tim Mak says the high school students have actually rushed to throw their support behind their principal, Karl Krawitz. (Meanwhile, Politico notes Krawitz himself is receiving threats from across the country. Let's all just calm down!) Politico quotes Sullivan saying:

“It is just bullying, and I’m trying not to take it to heart because that’s what they want me to do,” she said Tuesday. “I’m getting a lot of negative attention locally, and that’s a lot to deal with. The students at my high school are being really bad about the situation - it just sucks that they don’t support me at all in any of this"

On Twitter she and her principal, Tim Meadows Karl Krawitz, seem to have reconciled, because she tweeted today: "I just got off the phone w/ dr. k, he knows this was never aimed at him & this is out of control. Lets move on."

I see that her fellow students have no problem exercising their First Amendment rights, while condemning her for exercising her own. Hypocrisy thy name is teenager.

        VERY GOOD!!!!!!!

Oh OK so you are for her first amendment rights (obviously because you agree with her opinion) but not for the first amendment rights of anyone who now disagrees with her??? So actually Hypocrisy they name is Victoria Two.

Shannon, you amazing muttonhead, you have completely missed the point. I am in favor of everyone exercising their first amendment rights. It is her peers who are against her exercising hers. Absolutely nothing in my declaration in part or in whole, condemned the harrassing students. Stupidity, thy name is Shannon!

Good for her. She should stand her ground. We all have opinions and if we have equal rights we should be able to say what we want. I'm really disgusted with this situation gone overboard. She is being bullied.

She claims she is being bullied - more than likely she's just receiving feedback in opposition to her tweeted opinion and like any immature liberal she considers that bullying. If you don't want to deal with opposing opinions, try not posting your own opinions on the world wide web. Simple as that!

This was a school sponsored event, she traveled there on school transportation, and I assume her principal feels she made the school look bad.

looks like future Teabagger/ Republican voters are getting their practice in on intimidating anyone that does not agree with the party line.

Aw, you poor thing, you are seeing first hand that you have the right to free speech and so does everyone else, you are responsible for your own words and actions, so pull up your big girl panties and deal with it. You dished it out, so you better be able to take it!

I've been fortunate enough in my life to never have been to Kansas. Even Dorothy & Toto had the good sense to leave. Hot, humid, and infested with chiggers and Republicans.

Been to kansas lived there 2 years. Nice folks there unlike a lot of places on the coasts, deep south, north and new england along with most metro areas (minneapolis is great good folks). boomer they wouldn't want you to to visit but would b e too nice to say so. try nyc or baltimore or some other armpit. as for emma, even youngsters in kansas get carried away sometimes and blurt out the truth. emma, you hang in there plenty of people think you are doing great.

Have been to Kansas many times. It's humid in summer and freezing in winter. Yes, there are a lot of Republicans there. There are also many Democrats. There are also a lot of good, down to earth people that value family, friends and a quiet simple life. The also have one of the most beautiful synagogues I've ever been in. Yes, they even have Jews in Kansas.

Next time you want to make a derogatory post, perhaps you should take a moment to research first and second to rethink what you may say.

Tweeting is always fun until someone gets an eye knocked out.
    • bostonEddie  •  5 mths ago
Kids bully because they can bully (and get away with it). Nothing to do with Brownback or politics. The principal is letting the bullies get away with it--suddenly the comment about Brownback posted after hours is a concern for the whole school, whereas bullying after school hours is just, "Hey, freedom of speech. No prob here."

Good grief, are they going to crucify her over a friggin' tweet?
    • Lucas  •  Den Bosch, Netherlands  •  5 mths ago
bullying a girl that voices her opinion on a tweet. Seriously? Since when did it became mandatory to follow everyone else like sheep, whilst you obviously disagree with the others. Emma is an amazing young girl to able to react so strong against the bullying and the refusal of following the others into a braindead herd.

So the principal has no problem butting in and demanding his student apologize for speaking her mind and using her right to free speech... why is he not intervening in a situation that is actually SCHOOL related and part of what he is paid to deal with. Nice- so it's okay to to bully in your school- but it's not okay to use free speech outside of it?

She seems to favor the word "sucks." Obviously not very intelligent.

the high school must be a recruiting center for teabaggers

Love her response. Clearly she is able to handle things in a respectable way. Too bad too many other idiots don't have that capacity.

This was the real stupidity & recklessness of the Governor's Office. You don't publish people's, especially young people's, private information. It's endangerment and any 'staffer' should have known. Pink-Slip them.

Obviously she was wrong and should apologize. The majority of the student body at her school can't be wrong. she should act like a grown up and just apologize. sometimes life just isn't fair. If she wants this to go away, just apologize.
