These Bubble O' Bill earrings are the ultimate throwback to an Australian childhood

There is nothing quite like the joy of a melty Bubble O'Bill on a hot Australian summer day or the summer tradition of having a seagull steal your chips.

Now, you can express your undying love for these childhood moments, with a series of Australiana-themed earrings and brooches made by Molly Coombs Marr, a jewellery maker based in Sydney, Australia.

You can sport rainbow Paddle Pop earrings, cockatoo ear studs, or even a brooch in the shape of the Sydney Opera House. All things that many Australians have a deep down affection for.

"I really love all these beautiful bits of Australia, the childhood stuff that I realise a lot of people do," Coombs Marr told Mashable Australia. The series is a response to the chintzy and tacky Australian merchandise that floods the country's shelves.

"There's really not much access to this sort of stuff," she said. "It's always 'tack-o-rama' fluffy koalas and boxing kangaroos. I wanted to let people have a bit of Australia to wear around and be proud of, but the good stuff, you know."

A recent design graduate, Coombs Marr has been making jewellery as a hobby for around a year and sells them on design marketplace, Etsy. Although her Bubble O' Bill earrings are arguably the most eye catching, they're actually not her best seller.

"People love the Bubble O' Bill [earrings], but people aren't really brave enough to wear them I think," she said. "I'd say what people want the most are the native bird studs, I guess they're a little less intense."

It's clear that Coombs Marr is on to a good thing and she has more Australiana-themed jewellery in the pipeline. "It's pretty close to my heart, I love the outdoors, Australian flowers and things — so I feel like I'm not really going to run out of ideas anytime soon," she laughs.

Less tacky Australian merchandise? That's something we can vouch for.
