‘What a Bully!’: Atheist Leader & ACLJ Head Spar Over a Jesus Statue & Moses in Epic Eye-Rolling Debate

moses2Over the weekend, you may have missed an epic debate that aired on FOX News between Annie Laurie Gaylor, the co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) and Jordan Sekulow, the executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ).

The two couldn't stand further apart from one another on the ideological and theological spectrum, which was illustrated when they clashed in a tense on-air debate over the presence of a Jesus statue on federal land in Montana. In addition to this subject, the two tussled over the presence of Moses in the U.S. Supreme Court as well. The situation was so intense that Gaylor, clearly overwhelmed by Sekulow's opinions on church-state issues, resorted to calling her opponent "a bully" who misinforms the public.

There's a reason FOX chose to bring these individuals in to debate the Jesus statue. To begin, the FFRF, an atheist group, has been the main force behind an attempt to have the relic removed from federal lands, while the ACLJ, a right-leaning, pro-faith legal non-profit, has been the primary source working against the atheist groups' actions (the latter organization helped gather 70,000 signatures in support of the statue).

Gaylor began by making a case for her group's attempts to ban the statue from federal grounds.

"We are charging that this is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion and an improper use of federal land that excludes those of us who are Christian, who are not Catholic -- the 15 percent of us who are non-religious should not be having to support a shrine to Jesus on federal land," she said.

Jordan, though, predictably took a very different view.

"This is the same group that is against 'under God' in the pledge, the national motto, 'In God We Trust,' the National Day of Prayer -- I'm sure would like to sandblast some religious references we have here all over Washington, D.C. -- maybe Moses from the Supreme Court and the 10 Commandments."

This is where the dialogue took an interesting turn, as Gaylor interrupted Sekolow to proclaim, "Moses isn't in the Supreme Court, Jordan."

As the ACLJ has pointed out on its blog, Gaylor is incorrect. Moses' image is actually present on the building a number of times. Following the interview, Sekulow wrote:

As an attorney, I deal with the facts, so here they are. Moses appears not once, but at least four times in and on the Supreme Court building: on the East Pediment of the exterior, in the South Courtroom frieze, a West Façade medallion, and as one of the metopes of the Great Hall of the Court.

    moses1

The awkward interview continued, with Gaylor and Sekulow talking over one another.

"You have interrupted me quite a bit," Gaylor proclaimed. "You have misinformed the public."

The debate ends, somewhat stunningly, with the atheist leader saying, "What a bully he is!"

    Watch the discussion, below:

This interview may remind you of a December FOX segment during which host Eric Bolling kicked FFRF co-president (and Gaylor's husband) Dan Barker off of his program. As you may remember, Barker had insulted Christianity.

Now that Gaylor has been corrected regarding the presence of Moses, one wonders: Will the FFRF now rail against his appearances in the Supreme Court? Considering the group's past targets, it's a valid question.

Lotta- So what's the problem? I don't believe that Jesus, Buddha, Allah, or anyone else has one bit to say about what happens to me when I die, so why should you care if I don't? BTW, you didn't answer the question at all, which is typical when somebody want's to ram the rambling, self-contradicting, boring, unreadable, and obsolete text of the Bible down my throat.

Your insulting question doesn't deserve attention much less an answer. Quit giving atheists a bad name.

Honestly, I don't think Jesus cares one way or another.
But what next. We need to take down the walls of the Supreme Court ?!
We are not suppose to make laws favoring one religion over another. Too often lately we are favoring the religion of Atheisim.
      -
Religion is the type of work they do according to the ideology they believe in. The religion of atheism is to take the freedom of religion from those who want to do religious works for the God they believe in.
      -
Isn't it LIBERTY & JUSTICE for all ? Or is it just liberty for the ungodly or lawless and who cares about those who live by the law.

Theists who call Atheism a religion, say far more about their own faith, than they do about the lack of ours.

What makes you religion so great that it deserves a place in the government when other religions don't? How would repersenting your religion alone be "LIBERTY & JUSTICE for all"?
      • mark m 3 mths ago
I don't think thats what was being said FSM. Operative here...."I don't think Jesus cares one way or another". Doesn't sound as if she is promoting here christianity over anything.
      • FSM 3 mths ago
I didn't say anything about Christians either. This idea that Atheism is a type of Theism is absurd and shows how unable Theists are to empathize with anyone else. It actually belittles their own faith. In their eagerness to outwit an atheist, they stick their finger in their own god's eye.

I was merely trying to point that out. Personally I'm a Pastafian, and i would love to see His noodly appendages hanging from the supreme court ceiling!

Again kiddies, we are a Republic with democratic elections. Our government is set up to protect the rights of all of its citizens not just the majority. We stress individual liberties and in order to safeguard equal treatment under these laws government is required to remain neutral on religion. That said, the challenges that are arising are due in part to the failure to respect that line and the government's lax oversight or even complicity, as in ten commandments being displayed in courthouses. These are constitutional transgressions. Individuals are free to believe and practice their faiths in their homes, churches, cars, but government is not permitted to support or promote any on state and federal properties paid for and maintained by all taxpayers regardless of race, color, or creed. Simple really.
      • real truth 3 mths ago
Very simple,in fact. And very well put.
Honestly,I don't know what is so difficult to understand about that.
The only ones that don't get this is Christians. Specifically them and no other group.
        Why?

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

I am a believer in Jesus Christ and I do hold to the teachings of the Bible that do not coincide with the ways of our county, however I believe that it is a choice to be made on an individual basis, God makes us choose he doesn't force us. I am not entirely sure we are suppose to be making statues either? ACLJ in my opinion causes more problem than good, it a hospital not a police station you know, we don't lay down a bunch of laws and then say if you can follow this we will share the Truth with you. We give them the Truth and we let Jesus work the heart - we are the clay he is the sculpture. If we force other people to agree with us that are not of us, they will hate us, and if they hate us, they will not be inclined to hear the message we bring them. The ACLJ is constantly causing contention with the public in area's we do not have to enforce by religion and thus making more people turn away from God. My only request is that you people who are not us, let us practice our freedom of religion and do not
try and give the government power in area's that fall under freedom of religion less they break the laws of the country and I ask that the laws of the country be made with freedom of religion in mind.
    • mark m  •  3 mths ago
To all atheists who may read this. Should we remove God from all things in this country...money, the pledge, public and Private forums....no god, no religion. Thumbs up for yes, and down for no. Christians and other religions cannot vote.

The *original Constitution* was ratified in 1789 and had only 1 reference to religion in Article 6 : "No religious test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or Public Trust under the United States."

The de facto motto of the United States, adopted as part of the Great Seal by an Act of Congress was "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of Many, One) Congress changed it 174 years later(1956) to "In God We Trust"

The original pledge of allegiance was written in 1892 by * Baptist minister* Richard Bellamy and did not include the words "Under God" until 1954.These were added by Congress.

America did not start printing paper money until 1861, the words "In God We Trust" did not appear on it until...1957.

Congress made these changes during the Red Scare (1950's era), a time in our nation's history where people were persecuted on the suspicion of being "Communists". Communism was supposedly the enemy of God and religion, reporting on your neighbor, blacklists, and trials were commonplace. Fear, and the dictate of Congress put these religious statements on our currency and pledge, not the choice of the people. Isn't that "Big Government?"

I have no objection to these words being where they are. Nor do I have an issue with the statue of Jesus or the crosses in Arlington park. I am no fan of Gaylor. However...I would like to be able to wear my pentagram (wiccan not Satan...don't believe in that guy) without being attacked. To celebrate Ostara and Imbolc with my friends, to be unafraid for my gay friends when they walk hand in hand. It's Freedom OF Religion..not from. Religion should not be used to make laws .

Would you be ok with a Muslim shrine on public land?
    • David  •  West Chicago, Illinois  •  3 mths ago
Here's where the whole thing is silly... in this country we are free to practice (or not practice) any religion we choose. Additionally, we are not forced to practice a religion we do not follow. What will the FFRF do next, require that the National Cathedral in DC be torn down? Require all federal public attraction signs (those brown signs for points of interest that draw at least 100k visitors a year) posted along interstate highways noting Hindu temples be declared illegal? News for you all... no one is saying a person can't be an atheist; if the sight of a church or religious artifact offends you, then don't look at it. I had a Muslim man once ask me for my permission for him to use my office space to bow facing north according to his faith. His actions were completely alien to my faith, but I was tolerant of his needs because THIS IS AMERICA, and he is free to practice his religion.

Sorry but in God we trust was put on the bills very recently and has no historic value at all.. As to "most of us" I assume you mean the rightwing Christians who are not the majority in the U.S. You want to go to church and sing songs and roll around on the floor, go ahead but I do not want to hear about it.
    • GeauxGhoti  •  3 mths ago
Atheism, like religion, is a philosophy... What the supreme court and many of you are failing to recognize is that, just because all religion is philosophy, doesn't mean that all philosophy is religion or religious.

Atheism is not a religion, nor can it be considered so in any realistic sense. The only people who claim it is are; A) Those who truly do not understand it or B) Those who think that by falsely labeling it as religion, they can strengthen their religious position. Unfortunately for them, making an argument from a position of ignorance or willful misinformation/deceit/stupidity (take your pick as all apply) does not strengthen your argument... It simply makes you look more foolish.

There are many, many religious symbols permitted on public, government-owned lands. Visit any military cemetery, for example, and you will likely see thousands of them. Undoubtedly those symbols are protected by the 1st Amendment, government ownership of the land notwithstanding.
