Burger King vies for Hot Dog King crown with menu additions

Burger King is looking for a new crown: Hot Dog King. The Miami-based chain says it plans to put hot dogs on its menu nationally for the first time starting Feb. 23. It may seem like a jarring addition for those who know the chain for its Whoppers. But Burger King says its ability to flame-grill meat makes hot dogs a natural fit on its menu. The move comes as Burger King works to push up sales amid intensifying competition — McDonald’s is offering breakfast items all day to spark a turnaround, while Wendy’s has a “4 for $4” deal to get customers in the door.

This is probably the most obvious product launch ever.

Yahoo Food got a sneak peek at the new hot dogs, which are a custom 100 percent beef and spice blend made specially by Oscar Mayer for Burger King. The biggest difference between these hot dogs and others served at gas stations and ballparks around the world is that they are “flame-grilled” like the burgers at Burger King. They come in two varieties: Classic ($1.99), with ketchup, mustard, chopped onions and relish (although any item can be left off; never forget “Have it your way”) and Chili Cheese ($2.29). Both are served on a baked bun, which isn’t toasted.

We’re tapping into a category that’s huge. We might not have the expertise to start serving spaghetti, but hot dogs, we do.
