Burned parts of Yosemite National Park reopening
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — Areas of Yosemite National Park that were burned in a massive wildfire last year are being opened to the public again, but with a word of caution.
Park spokesman Scott Gediman said Wednesday that visitors to scorched parts of Yosemite need to watch out for dangerous trees, uneven ground, possible rock falls and debris on the trails.
The parts of Yosemite being reopened include the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias and hiking trails in the Hetch Hetchy area. The burned areas of the park have been closed since the Rim Fire started Aug. 17.
The fire is the third-largest wildfire in California history and the largest recorded in the Sierra Nevada.
In total, nearly 400 square miles of the Stanislaus National Forest burned. Of that, about 120 square miles were within Yosemite.
