In burning Honduras jail, inmates yelled for help

COMAYAGUA, Honduras — Hector Daniel Martinez was asleep in a small metal bed, one of dozens stacked so high in a narrow barrack that they nearly touched the roof, when the flames started.

The fire raced above his head. The prisoners screamed.

    "Rescue!" they cried. "Help!"

Martinez, 32 and a homicide suspect, ran toward the barrack's single entrance. The door was locked. Most of the other 135 prisoners in the room ran toward the other end, where there was a bathroom with water and sinks.

It turned out to be a fatal choice. Martinez survived. He was only one of 28 inside the barrack who did.

"One hundred and seven are dead," he said, his face conveying little emotion, as if a toll too difficult to believe.

In all, the fire at an overcrowded prison in Honduras killed 358 people, officials confirmed Wednesday, making it the world's deadliest prison fire in a century. The local governor said an inmate called her moments before the blaze and screamed that he was going to set the prison on fire.

Comayagua Gov. Paola Castro said she called the Red Cross and fire brigade immediately but firefighters said they were kept outside for half an hour by guards who fired their guns in the air, thinking they had a riot or a breakout on their hands.

As the investigation continued into the night, a group of prisoners remained guarded by officers inside the prison grounds. They described a chaotic scene as the fire broke out and quickly spread from one barrack to another, all filled with highly flammable curtains and mattresses.

When the fire was extinguished all that remained of several barracks were the brick exteriors, painted with murals of Jesus Christ, saints and Psalms. Inside, the metal cots, stacked four high and at least a dozen across, were charred and falling down.

At the end of each barrack was a bathroom with sinks and tubs. Wednesday evening, there were still numerous bodies inside several of the bathrooms.

In one large sink sat the bodies of two prisoners facing one another. Their remains were completely black.

Others were squished together, their bodies indistinguishable.

"In the other cells we found them in the same positions," said state prosecutor German Enamorado.

Selbim Adonay, 18, also a homicide suspect, said he was trapped behind the metal door leading inside his barrack, unable to do anything as the flames spread and prisoners screamed.

"We couldn't do anything because we were locked inside," Adonay said.

Martinez said dozens of the prisoners in his barrack rushed toward the bathroom at the other end, desperately seeking to escape the heat. The sinks and tubs were filled with water. Some may have tried climbing on top of one another to reach the roof, Enamorado said.

From the front entrance of the barrack, prisoners watched helplessly as the guard carrying the keys fled without opening them up.

"He threw the keys on the floor in panic," Martinez said, a dust mask hanging from his neck.

A prisoner who also served as a nurse picked them up and went from one barrack to another, opening them up and barely withstanding the flames, Martinez said.

But by that time, it was already too late.

Just like many of their victims probably called for help. And were in a panic. And died horribly, at the hands of one of these prisoners.

Inmates yelled for help!.... did you expect they would burn up quietly? what a stupid story title...
      • Loki 3 mths ago
as prisoners, they lost their right to complain about their living conditions....they should have kept their mouths shut and accepted their just fate

Note to self. Do not get arrested in Honduras.

"as reports suggest that more than half of the inmates at the Comayagua prison had never been convicted, or even charged, with a crime."

Read the related Yahoo article on this story. Many of these individuals were not convicted of ANYTHING; let alone rape, murder, pedophilia, etc. Get your facts straight before making such moronic comments.

ANYONE could go to prison on a day they least expect it. I bought a soda at a 7--11 type store, drove a couple miles to a friends house to clean it for her. Just before that I had gone back and forth over whether to wear my red or black jogging suit.... As I turned the corner to pull up to her house, I was blocked by two squad cars that ordered me to freeze and rushed at me. A cop kept screaming a question at me about where I had come from.
But wouldn't listen to the answer. I had to beg them to look in my trunk, begged them to look in my friends house, ("My check is on the counter!") A female burglar fit MY description perfectly! Finally I said could you please phone in again, maybe there is something different about the description and I don't fit it. They did, turns out if I had picked the other color jogging suit I'd have matched. The only other thing off was my car with the half white vinyl top was dark navy blue, mine was black! Probably in Texas during a trial, the only thing that would have saved me was that receipt from 2 miles away!!! I didn't burn to death in a jail fire or innocently go to prison/jail to await trial. Therefore by the grace of God go YOU & I. No one deserves to burn to death in a locked cage, while the guards run away. And shame on them, a PRISONER, grabbed those dropped keys and tried to save the others. Shame on some of you for judging these prisoners fitness to even live! Oh, save the simplest receipt! It could prove where you were, after you have forgotten maybe.

I'm sure there was a lot of sprinkling going on.
    • MUNTZI  •  3 mths ago
Were they expected to remain calm and accept burning to death with quiet dignity?
      • LNH 3 mths ago
        Yeah..like the monks in Nepal.

    • MtDewed  •  Findlay, Ohio  •  3 mths ago

A lot of the posters here behave as abhorrent sociopaths. Their only remorse seems to be that they were not at the scene on time to taste fried human flesh. Why do those people yell their homicidal spite to the world, and nobody gives them their pills? Why does not Yahoo treat such verbal action as "profanity, obscenities, abusive language, or otherwise objectionable content as determined by Yahoo!, in its sole discretion". Does that mean that Yahoo sees absolutely nothing to object to?!

watching the reaction of most bloggers - im beginning to think that if Jesus himself was in that jail for "subversive gov't activity" or predicting sub-prime mortgage scams and loss of homes in america - no one would simply care
    • The Homster  •  3 mths ago
What else would they yell? "Nah, I'm good. Thanks though!!"

Please stop acting like everyone in prison is guilty. Everyday innocent people are being set free. One innocent life lost is too many. A life of any kind lost from neglect is a travesty.

Keep in mind in most countries "Prison" is used literally and refers to simple jails and other places of incarceration. A lot of these guys were not convicted of anything they were simply awaiting trial. these were not necassarily the rapist / murderers ya'll are dehumanizing and cheering for their horrendous manner of death.
I am no bleeding heart but burning to death in a locked room isn't something I would wish on many. I also know if YOU or YOUR kids were even forced to watch a video of these peoples last ten minutes of life you would be screaming about the inhumanity of making you watch and YOU would have one of the POS lawyers ya'll love to hate demanding millions. Way to go with that "christian" attitude you hypocritical animals.......

In Honduras you can be locked up without being charged, it's conceivable that some of them were innocent. In a fire the heat is not your primary problem, it can be shielded for a time, the problem is lack of smoke free air or air that is too hot to breath and melts your lungs. You can actually drown in a fire from your own fluids... and none of these people deserved to die this way, even if some deserved to die.

they guard should be charge for murder for running away from saving them,no matter what they were sent to prison for they are still human,i would not do that a live lobster
