Bus crash in Schuylkill County, Pa., injures at least 30 people, six critically

At least 30 people were injured on Sunday, six critically, when a bus full of people en route home from a church retreat crashed in central Pennsylvania.

There were no reports of fatalities, Pennsylvania State Trooper David Beohm told CNN.

“The bus went off the exit ramp off of Interstate 81,” Beohm said. “At the end of the ramp you either turn left or right on Route 25, and the bus went across the center guide rail and straight across.”

A state trooper report said the driver “lost control for unknown reason,” scooted off the roadway via the right shoulder and exit ramp, shot across Pennsylvania Route 25 and struck a center guide rail. Then it hit an embankment and traveled another 50 yards into a wooded area before stopping.

“Approximately 30 occupants of the sustained varying degree of injuries and were transported to area local hospitals,” the report said. “Assistance was provided at the scene by local fire and EMS agencies.”

The bus passengers were returning home from a church retreat, WPVI-TV reported, saying that 32 people had been injured. Some of them were teenagers and volunteers who had attended LCBC HSM church fall retreat were involved in the crash, WPVI reported. It was returning to Manheim, Pennsylvania, when the crash occurred.
