    Business group: reforming visas could help tourism

    ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York's largest business lobby says reforming the visa process could help the state's tourism industry.

    The Business Council of New York State says that while the tourism industry is the fifth largest employer in the state, potential visitors from many countries face long waits to get a visa. A federal program allows citizens of 36 countries to visit the United States without a visa, but tourists from countries such as Brazil, China and India require visas.

    Wait times can reportedly run more than 100 days.

    The Business Council says a bill introduced by Sen. Charles Schumer would reform the visa process and encourage more global tourists to travel to the United States.

    The council says tourism supports more than 674,000 jobs in the state.
