    Cablevision and Verizon Settle Dispute Over Controversial Ad [VIDEO]

    Cablevision and Verizon have speedily settled a lawsuit in which the former charged Verizon with running misleading ads about the speed of its broadband service.

    Cablevision, the fifth-largest cable TV provider by subscribers, sued Verizon on Dec. 6, charging that its ad campaign was based on outdated information. A hearing on the matter had been scheduled for Monday at the U.S. District Court in Central Islip, N.Y., but the two companies announced Monday night that they had settled the issue.

    William Kula a rep for Verizon, says the primary ad in question, featured above, was pulled from rotation on Dec. 17. Since the ad first aired in August, the company decided the ad had run its course, Kula says. The ad cites an FCC study claiming that Cablevision delivers 59% or less of its advertised speeds during peak hours.

    Cablevision, however, argued that the FCC report, released in August, was based on tests performed in March. Cablevision claims it has upgraded its system since then.

    Kula says new ads will roll out in a few weeks. Asked if the ads will once again attack Cablevision, Kula answered that that's likely since the two are competitors.

    Cablevision's legal skirmish with Verizon follows another recent run-in with Viacom. The latter had sued Cablevision in June over a live streaming app for iOS that let the company's subscribers view live and on-demand program on their iPads. Viacom claimed that Cablevision broke its content distribution agreement by offering the app. The two settled the dispute in August.
