Cain, Bachmann want to reinstate waterboarding

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential hopefuls Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann both say they would reinstate waterboarding during interrogations of suspected terrorists, while rivals Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman both say they see the procedure as torture.

The GOP contenders split Saturday night over whether waterboarding would be an effective tool.

Cain says he doesn't support torture, but he says he would trust military leaders to determine what that means. He says he would return to waterboarding because he doesn't see it as torture.

Bachmann says she supports it, while Paul says it is illegal.

Huntsman says waterboarding diminishes U.S. standing in the world and undercuts the nation's values.

GOP contender Mitt Romney wasn't directly asked about the issue but adds he would use whatever means necessary to protect America.

      Quote, from Wikipedia:

"Waterboarding is a form of torture in which water is poured over the face of an immobilized captive, thus causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning. Waterboarding can cause extreme pain, dry drowning, damage to lungs, brain damage from oxygen deprivation, other physical injuries including broken bones due to struggling against restraints, lasting psychological damage and death.[1] Adverse physical consequences can manifest themselves months after the event, while psychological effects can last for years.[2] The term water board torture appears in press reports as early as 1976.[3]"

...... "Enhanced interrogation tecnique" ????????? ..... "Not torture" ????? .... Are you fu**ing insane, Mr. Cain, Mr. Perry, Mrs. Bachman ??? Paul really is starting to sound like the most sane GOP candidate, and I never thought I'd be saying that.

So if I grab a pillow and start suffocating someone for 15 secs then let them breathe and repeat this over and over it wouldn't be called torture in a criminal court in the US?
      • Zoey 6 mths ago
It may be seen as an Intentional Murder, to them. I'm not sure about Torture. o_o
      • Erik 6 mths ago
Bit different with water. Instinct kicks in, forcing the gag reflex. The adrenaline flows in massive quantities. There is physical damage (due to the uncontrollable gagging), as well as mental trauma from the prolonged adreline, fear and pain. Yes, waterboarding is torture. The Inquisition preferred it to most all other methods.
      • Christopher J 6 mths ago
Well it was to show that the intent is not to kill the person. Murder can only be charged if you kill the person.

I am sure there is a charge like Intent to commit harm or murder along with torture, simple assault etc.

Police officers must undergo being tasered before they can use tasers.

Any President that wants to use "enhanced interrogation techniques" should first have to undergo the process.
      • adamb 6 mths ago
its not our President who uses the technique. its our military and covert groups. you have no clue the training some go thru prior to ever using it. and short of being shot, almost every tool we use, we are subjected to first. tuck that into your pillow and sleep safely tonight!

Waterboarding is nothing when compared to being locked in a room with Michele Bachmann.

Sure, when Americans use it on other people, to Bachmann and Cain, waterboarding is not torture.

Wait until OTHER PEOPLE use waterboarding ON American soldiers and civilians CAUGHT in their countries doing harmful things to them!

Bachmann and Cain are simpletons with very little amount of brain cells. Cain boasted having left the plantation sometime ago. I don't know if the brotha's tellin' the truth.
      • Zoey 6 mths ago
Actually, most third World countries, and other countries, DO use Water boarding, as interrogations, and what not. o_o You just rarely hear of it, when they do it to American People/Soldiers, because it is illegal in the States. So, it is NEVER reported. x3
      • nunya 6 mths ago
Yeah im sure they'll ditch the beheadings in favor of waterboarding to get the attention of CAIR and the ACLU..OH and dipshits like you "Henry"..go live somewhere else you anti american insignifigant turd

All you big talkers who say waterboarding is not torture should volunteer to participate in a demonstration to show that you have the courage of your convictions. My guess is you would quickly change your opinion.
      • Jimmy 6 mths ago
        Thank you my point exactly
      • Cheryl H 6 mths ago
Ah, many of our military do go through it. And this is worse than what they would do to you if they captured you? Give me a break!

torture gets a confession, not the truth. people who are hurt and afraid will say anything to make it stop.
    • 626GINGER626  •  6 mths ago
I'm sure subjecting any enemy to 5 minutes of a Republican debate would be the most effective and productive form of torture. No one could withstand that.
    • sickofmorons  •  6 mths ago
Why are these morons focusing on issues like waterboarding anyway? We have millions without a job, without health insurance, without a home and THIS is what the GOP focuses on? Occupy Wall Street should turn into Occupy the Government. Let's get REAL people in there not rich, greedy, selfish losers.

Is it odd that the 2 heavily "Christian" republican candidates are all for torture? Seems very unlike "Christ" to me....
    • SusanM  •  6 mths ago
So they'd be cool with waterboarding if it were used on captured US soldiers? Because after all, it's not torture....

Cain's greedy brothers from another mother are secretly profiting from selling petrochemical equipment to Iran. GOP = Negotiate with Ahmadinejad bad, Sell Ahmadinejad petrochemical equipment good.

Waterboarding is fun unless the boat is going too fast.
    • Dobbie  •  6 mths ago
They need to waterboard Bachmann and Cain for a few hours and then ask them if they think it is not torture...
    • Randall  •  6 mths ago
We called it torture when it was done against American pilots. So I guess it's only torture if it's done against us, and just interrogation if we do it to someone else. Btw, John McCain said it was torture, and I don't see any former POWs running for office.

Let's try waterboarding Bachmann and Cain and see if they'll tell the truth.

I have been waterboarded in training in the same fashion as an enemy soldier....It is very effective!...a lot of armchair generals here apparently know better....LOL

When I first learned basic interrogation (long before many of you were born) I was told that we DO NOT use torture for two reasons. First, it's illegal. Second, it does not give reliable information. Nothing I have heard from those who seem infatuated with water boarding suggests that anything has changed. Cheney said it got good information. The actual reports told otherwise. All the good information had been obtained before the water boarding started. I've had many debates with people who believe water boarding works. To the best of my knowledge, none of them have ever SEEN an actual interrogation, let alone done one. I offered to water board them for just 15 minutes. The only condition was that I would not stop short of a medical emergency no matter how much they begged. If, at the end of 15 minutes they did not think water boarding was torture, I was prepared to AGREE with them. I've had no takers. All hat and no cattle, as we used to say in Texas. My final point is that I'm sick of hearing that the other guys do worse. Is that now our standard? We're bad, but they're worse? I never signed on to defend that. I've served with many service members, and they're better than that. This country is better than that. At least I hope we are. This is just another of the many examples of how out-of-touch with reality the Republicans are.
