Cain rails against Wall Street protesters

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain on Wednesday called the Occupy Wall Street protesters anti-American and anti-capitalistic.

"Don't be jealous, don't be envious," Cain said as he signed copies of his memoir. "I don't have much patience for someone who does not want to achieve their American dream the old-fashioned way."

More than 400 people attended the event. The former head of Godfather's Pizza pulled up in front of the Barnes & Noble bookstore in a black luxury bus, and he entered the store to cheers and applause.

After winning the Sept. 24 straw poll in Florida, Cain has seen his popularity surge, especially among conservatives. He is showing well in many surveys, near front-runner and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has raised more money.

When asked about the thousands of people that have been protesting in lower Manhattan, Cain said, "They're basically saying that somehow the government is supposed to take from those that have succeeded and give to those who want to protest. He added: "That's not the way America was built."

Cain said people should instead protest the White House and President Barack Obama because the president has not created jobs. Bankers and others on Wall Street have created jobs, he said.

"They're protesting in the wrong place," Cain said. "I'm not sure I know why they're there. If they're there because they are jealous of Wall Street and bankers and people who have succeeded, then they're there for the wrong reasons. This country is based on people who achieve their dreams and work."

He added that the protesters "should go figure out what America is all about."

Romney, who has called the protest "class warfare," brushed aside any talk of the protests during a brief stop in Tallahassee on Wednesday.

"I'm just trying to occupy the White House," Romney said.

Entropy is their hallmark. Disruption, chaos. They can't possibly do something constructive with their lives, oh no, that would be too difficult.

When most of us cause our companies to lose a lot of money and value, we get fired plus

two paychecks. When CEOs or Wall Street bankers do the same thing, they get golden

parachutes worth tens of millions of dollars to compensate them for their failure.

      Broken system...

Enough with the envy. Get off your #$%$ and make something of your life. Maybe working for someone else is a bad idea.

It is because good talent is hard to find and guys like you can't actually do a good job with what they need. You should start a company, hire somebody to the highest position of trust, and then provide him a parachute in the event of a buyout or other event pops up. You might actually be able to keep the talent and not have him hired away by a competitor. You need to understand business.

“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country: corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in High Places will follow, and the Money power of the Country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.” – Abraham Lincoln – PRO-AMERICAN

Just remember which political party believes corporations should have unlimited power, no corporate taxes, & unlimited political donations...thats pure representation without taxation & without accountability. Thanks republicans, way to really keep the best interests of america in mind.

I agree. From a corporate perspective, people are only worth money. I pay about $500 per month for health insurance premiums, my co-pays keep doubling and hospitals keep demanding thousands of dollars up-front before I can receive tests my doctors have ordered. I had to talk with three different account managers the other day when I went in for surgery and told them I could only make payments on the $3800 up-front cost. I don't place blame on most doctors or dentists because they actually provide the life-giving service and are willing to work with me, but I'm sure the CEO's, presidents and vice presidents only see my name and think of how my money could be used for vacations and exotic swimming pools. I have known some of these people, and that's how they think. Other people are disgusted with this mind-set as well!

I don't think many people believe that a mixed economy of capitalism and socialism, such as ours, is fundamentally wrong. What is wrong is the enriching of one tiny segment of our society that occurs when the balancing mechanisms of laws and regulations are eliminated or completely flouted.

I for one think mixing socialism with capitalism is detructive to prosperity. We are a free enterprise nation. As for the laws you are correct but they are not made on Wall Street. Encamp the White House instead of hurting everyones job.this is pointless and destructive.

This country has been headed in the wrong direction for over 30 years and the corruption has finally caught up to the #$%$ that created it. Of coarse Washington doesn't want anything to do with this because they have created this by way of the lobbyist. Accountability is going to be a hard pill for the Washington elite to swollow, maybe we will have stuff it down their throats.

You know what is anti-american and anti-capitalistic... BAIL OUTS. Under the capitalist system the strong survive the weak fail and they surely would have failed of their own devices. The banks and auto companies should have been allowed to die. Other companies would have taken their places and maybe learned something from these idiots that are leeches to the American people.
    • Justin  •  7 mths ago
I thought capitalism meant that there is no such thing as too big to fail. If you make bad investments, you go under. Thats COMPETITION. It's orwellian how the corporations are actually behaving socialist, being subsidized and bailed out by the government. Its doublethink. This is not capitalism. This is grand larceny. Get with it people
    • Patrick  •  7 mths ago
If the banks and wall st were so successful, why did the government have to bail them out?

Do people really think the 'old-fashioned' American dream is anything more than a ploy by the corporate elite to achieve their goals, not ours? 'Keep your head down', 'Nose to the grind-stone', 'work hard'...I am sure millions upon millions work hard and dont see one penny of profits from thier work, while owners, CEOs and other members of the luck-sperm club reap the benefit of the 'American dream'. Socio-economic mobility can best be achieved collectively, not individually. The new and equal American dream is founded on worker-led industry that sees the employees get the profits and vote how the company is run...not the shareholders!

Herman Cain Successful businessman? Just tell me, when was the last time you ate at a Godfathers Pizza? Wait have another one. How many Godfathers Pizzas do you have in your City? Okay, just one more I promise. When was the last time you've even seen a Godfathers Pizza? Let's not begin to Pretend that he's a good businessman. Now if he was the CEO of Domino's, Papa Johns, Cici's, or heck, even Little Caesars that argument would hold more water. I know, he was the CEO of RC Cola!
    • Willy Lunchmeat  •  7 mths ago
Will the next imbecile candidate please rise!
    • JF  •  7 mths ago
Is Cain's old fashioned way of making it in America to pay less than a living wage, no health care, fire you if you get sick? We don't have to go back too far in history to find government troops firing (shooting) at protesters. Is this the old fashioned way?
Since our media can't ask a tough question we really don't know what Cain's talking about.
So far it's a sound bite.
