Cain's 'impossible dream' resonates with voters

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) — Herman Cain is firing up the crowd at a tea party rally in this West Tennessee town when the generator powering his sound system shudders to a halt.

Cain stands awkwardly for a few moments then suddenly begins to sing. Slowly at first but gaining in speed, he belts out "Impossible Dream" in the rich baritone he's honed in church choir.

"You know, when it's your rally, you can do what you want to do!" Cain says as he finishes with a raucous laugh. The 500 or so supporters who have jammed the strip mall parking lot to hear the Republican Party's newest star speak roar their approval.

Momentum restored, Cain launches into a pitch for his signature 9-9-9 tax plan, and the crowd is right there with him, chanting 9-9-9 along with the Georgia businessman. The plan would scrap the current tax code and replace it with a 9 percent tax on personal income and corporations as well as a new 9 percent national sales tax.

The 65-year-old's improbable campaign for the presidency is all about momentum right now. How does he maintain the wave he's riding in recent polls that have catapulted him from an also-ran in the GOP race to the elite top tier?

There are many reasons his bid could fade as quickly as it rose. He acknowledged Friday that he will trail former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry significantly in fundraising. Cain has never held elected office and could wilt under the rigors of the campaign trail and the withering scrutiny coming his way.

But Cain's moment is right now, and the former Godfather's pizza chief executive is marketing himself with practiced skill, banking on his charisma and the notion that the messenger is as important as the message.

    His everyman image is resonating.

"In the field right now, he's the most like me," said Jimmy Hoppers, a 60-year-old physician from Jackson, who was hoping to meet Cain so he could hand deliver a $1,000 donation to his campaign. "He's run a business and paid the bills. He's authentic."

On Friday night Cain, who is African-American, drew about 2,000 people — some in workshirts and overalls and nearly all white — to a feed barn in rural Waverly, Tenn.

This is a socially conservative country and Cain — ever the salesman — knows his audience. He closes by invoking God and singing the hymn "He Looked Beyond My Faults."

"I love him," gushed truck driver James Bland after Cain spoke. "He doesn't talk down to you. I think he gets the working man."

"And it makes me so happy that he's put God back into things," chimed in Bland's wife, Karen.

In a year of anti-government fervor, Cain is casting himself as the anti-politician Main Street candidate who would bring common-sense business know-how to the bureaucratic thick of Washington. The former conservative radio show host is brash and straight-talking, saying that "stupid people are ruining America." He mimics liberals with a high-pitched whiny voice.

"Well, he doesn't have foreign policy experience," he says to laughs. "And the guy we have in there now does?"

Cain doesn't ignore the race issue, saying that some critics have called him "a racist" and an "Oreo" for leaving the "Democrat plantation."

"I have grown up telling it like it is and I am going to continue to tell it like it is," he said at a campaign rally in a suburb of Memphis, where he was born. "I don't talk politician."

    Voters are responding

He drew large and enthusiastic crowds Friday as he kicked off a two-day bus tour in Tennessee, hopscotching to a trio of tea party events across the state.

Tea party activists make up the backbone of Cain's support and he speaks their language fluently. "My fellow patriots," he begins some sentences. References to freedom and liberty pepper his remarks.

He dives into an anecdote about the Constitution and takes a jab at President Barack Obama.

"You know what? I kinda like my guns and my Bible," he says.

And at every turn, he stresses his business background, noting that at a recent debate fellow Republican candidates dismissed his 9-9-9 tax plan as politically dead on arrival.

"Politicians put together things that will pass. Businessmen put together plans that solve the problems," he said.

Indeed, Cain's 9-9-9 plan seems to have put him on the map.

Following the rally in Jackson, Cain bolted off the stage and shook hands with onlookers, including Linda Fowler-Cole, who had wandered over after a shopping trip to Lowe's and was wearing a T-shirt with an oversized picture of Obama

"I heard the 9-9-9 guy was here and I came to take a look," the Democrat said. "I like Obama, but that 9-9-9 is catchy."

In Bartlett, Tenn., Cain drew a number of black supporters who were excited at the prospect of a conservative African-American of his stature.

"To me he represents what Martin Luther King was talking about when he talked about his dream," Reginald Tooley, a 49-year-old physical therapist from Memphis, said. "With hard work and self-reliance you can do anything you want."

Cain says he has been buoyed by support from regular folks.

"You just don't know how much this encourages me, the fact that you all came out tonight," he said in Waverly.

"You see, this is what the folks in D.C. don't get because they don't come out here to meet with you."

Here is a dream for ya.

All laws that apply to Americans shall equally apply to all politicians.

All politicians will purchase health at their own expense.

All politicians contribute to their very own/personal retirement account.

        Great point!

Here's another dream: All laws that apply to human Americans shall apply equally to corporate Americans. Corporations should face the same legal restrictions as human citizens, like campaign donation limits, and face the same criminal sanctions as human citizens, like imprisoning corporate decision makers whose corporations commit fraud, bribery, or criminal negligence.
      • BILL 7 mths ago
Perhaps you meant UNIONS should face the same restrictions as citizens when making campaign contributions.

Here is the best advice you will ever get anywhere. DO NOT ELECT A PRESIDENT THAT THE MEDIA PROMOTES. You think the media is your friend. Got some real news for 'ya....the media is owned by some very, very bad people.
      • REALiTY 7 mths ago
agreed, so my take is don't vote for Romney.
As a matter of fact the best candidates are the ones the media (which includes hollywood) hates. Like Sara Palin, Michelle Bachman, Paul, Cain, et al.
      • Geovs20 7 mths ago

      • eric 7 mths ago
Me too that is why I am voting for Paul. He wants the same things we do and he will not lie or tell us what we want to hear. He just tells it like it is like it or not. That is my idea of a president.

Cain's retirement plan, what he's not telling you.

The fact is most Chileans, which Cain has modeled his program after are extremely unhappy with it.

Unlike the American Social Security program which has allowd the government to drain it by more than $2.5 trillon. The Cain proposal, like the Chileans would be plagued with commissions and fees.

All employees would be required to pay in 10 percent with employers paying in nothing unlike the required 6.2 percent paid by employee and 6.2 percent by employer to Social Security for a total of 12.4 percent.( Workers' payroll taxes were cut to 4.2 percent for this year, they will return to 6.2 percent Jan . Unless extended as President Obama has asked.)

Many complain of commissions and fees that have added up to nearly 15 percent of their contributions, according to the International Association of Latin American Pension Fund Supervisors.

The system's regulators say people who start paying the legal limit every month at age 25 can retire on 70 percent of their working salary. But that's not common. The average payout is $351 a month, just 36 percent of the average working wage, said Gonzalo Cid Vega, a pensions expert with Chile's Center for National Studies of Alternative Development.

"We created a private system with good intentions, but when a person retires, they become poor," Cid said.

By comparison, Chile's funds have delivered strong returns, despite some nerve-racking swings over the years. In 2008 alone, 60 percent of the growth obtained since the funds began was wiped out.

Other changes, in 2009, forced Chile's self-employed to participate, made it harder for people to take early retirement and exhaust their pensions before death, created government subsidies to cover housewives and other informal workers, and provided tax breaks for employers who voluntarily augment the contributions of low-wage workers.

The changes mean Chile's system is hardly the private plan it was billed to be: Two-thirds of all pensioners now get some kind of government support, which both increases taxes and enables private companies to profit more from government revenues.

Once again a politician is not telling the complete story.

This whole thing with choosing someone is such a waste of time they all tell lies and never have to answer for those lies if elected..the campaign donations is such a waste of money and if put towards our deficit would be great.. should be no donations allowed.. air time for candidates should be free. no bribes...several free debates on tv..and background checks..no more obligations to the rich donors. too much money wasted on all this stupid campaigning and #$%$ from all of them. If they talk off the issues then they are done...All this compitition only cause anger on both sides...not american at all...
    • A Yahoo! User  •  7 mths ago
It doesn't make a #$%$ what the tax rates are, until Americans are put back to work this economy isn't going to recover - The first priority has to be employment, stop Off_Shoring of American Industry, Manufacturing, Information Technology, etc., identify and lean on the Corporations, businesses that have and still are capitalizing on Third World "SLAVE" Labor -Off-Shoring is just a legal way of supporting SLAVERY, it's just done in another country, so that makes it justifiable --

Cain will never get elected. First of all he doesn't understand that Presidents don't pass laws. Second, he doesn't understand that Congress doesn't do ANYTHING. Third, good slogans don't make a President, fourth, as President he''ll have to actually come up with real solutions for real problems he doesn't even know exist. And I don't mean passing the Tea party "Conservative enough for Us" test. That's not happening.

So I’m stuck in traffic one day and nothing is moving.
Suddenly, a man knocks on my window. I roll down the
window and ask, “What’s going on?” he says “Terrorists
have kidnapped Congress, and are asking for a $10 million
dollar ransom. Otherwise, they are going to douse them
all in gasoline and set them on fire. We are going from
car to car, taking up a collection.” “How much is everyone
      giving, on average?” I ask.
The man replies, “About a gallon.”

America is spiraling towards doom at the hands of those who ' ignore ' and allow the media to do their thinking.

No longer will heart disease, cancers or automobile accident be the major causes of death.

Our nation will die for lack of knowledge at the hands of gullible fools

On Cain's 9-9-9 plan: “…while on paper Cain is promising a tax cut, in reality tens of millions of lower-income Americans would face tax increases. People in high tax brackets — 28 percent and higher — would likely see big tax cuts. (As part of his plan, Cain would also eliminate estate taxes and capital gains taxes, which, again, mostly affect higher-income people with stock and real estate investments.)
Right now, nearly half of taxpayers don’t pay income taxes, but they do pay their share of payroll taxes, which amounts to 7.65 percent of wage income (though much of it is capped at $107,000). Cain would also eliminate the earned-income tax credit, which is intended to lift working Americans out of poverty. Many of these workers currently receive tax refunds.
On top of that, Cain would introduce the new sales tax, which would affect lower and moderate-income people who spend most of their income on purchases, not savings and investments. Depending on how you do the math, people now paying zero or negative taxes might be faced with a 27 percent tax on income.”

I want a president who says that if he doesn't fix the US within the first two years that he will resign. It would also help if he takes a salary that is equal to or less than folks on social security.
    • army1man1  •  7 mths ago
Percy, what did you just say because it did not make any sense? What I write is an opinion. I did not insult you; I just state what I felt. So why do you feel that you need to say that. What I stated was true. Yes you should be responsible for your debts. If you tool out the loan you should have to repay it. It is not someone else’s responsibility to repay it. There are jobs out there for the people with the education to do the job. That in itself is for the individual to decide where the job market is and chose an area that his degree or education is going to benefit him or her the most. Then it is up to that person to repay what he or she borrowed not anyone else. If i take out a loan I have to pay it back not you. Every individual needs to be responsible for the decisions that they make
