Calif. gov signs landmark law to teach gay history

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill making California the first state in the nation to add lessons about gays and lesbians to social studies classes in public schools.

Brown, a Democrat, signed the landmark bill requiring public schools to include the contributions of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender in social studies curriculum. The Democratic-majority Legislature had passed the bill last week on a largely party-line vote.

"History should be honest," the governor said in a statement Thursday. "This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books."

Brown signed the bill Wednesday, but announced on Thursday that he had done so.

The bill has drawn criticism from some churches and conservative groups that argue such instruction would expose students to a subject that some parents find objectionable.

Republican lawmakers who opposed the bill had called it a well-intentioned but ill-conceived bill. Some raised concerns that it would indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality.

State Sen. Mark Leno, a Democrat from San Francisco and the bill's author, hailed the bill signing as a step toward teaching tolerance. Supporters say the bill will teach students to be more accepting of gays and lesbians in light of the bullying that happens to gay students.

"Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT Americans," Leno said in a statement.

California law already requires schools to teach about women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labor. The Legislature over the years also has prescribed specific lessons about the Irish potato famine and the Holocaust, among other topics.

The new law, SB48, requires the California Board of Education and local school districts to adopt textbooks and other teaching materials that cover the contributions and roles of sexual minorities, as soon as the 2013-2014 school year.

The legislation leaves it to local school boards to decide how to implement the requirement. It does not specify a grade level for the instruction to begin.

Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, a conservative family group, said under the new law parents will have no choice but to take their children out of public school and homeschool them to avoid what he said was "immoral indoctrination." The new law applies only to public schools, not private schools or families who homeschool.

"Jerry Brown has trampled the parental rights of the overwhelming majority of California fathers and mothers who don't want their children to be sexually brainwashed at school," Thomasson said. "This new law will prohibit textbooks and teachers from telling children the facts that homosexuality is neither healthy nor biological."

The bill was supported by gay rights organizations including Equality California and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. Teacher groups also said the bill would help students prepare for a diverse and evolving society.

"There is no room for discrimination of any kind in our classrooms, our communities or our state," said Dean Vogel, president of the California Teachers Association.

Susan Brownell Anthony, Jane Addams, Mary Elizabeth Bowser, Elizabeth Blackwell, Deborah Sampson Gannett, Annie Oakley, Rose Parks, Ida B Wells, George Washington Carver, Jackie Robinson, Benjamin Banneker, Fredrick Douglass, Jesse Owens, Whitney Moore Young...

The list goes on and on, but I doubt you know who most of those people are anyway. Well, if you were paying attention in school you would know all of those names and why. All through the efforts of open minded people getting Women and Black history taught in school against the biased public that saw no good coming from it. Being short sighted is the best way to repeat historical mistakes and atrocities.

Satin has shown just how far away from Christian principles he has taken us, our country and the world.

      California's new anthem....

In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
      But now, God knows,
      Anything Goes.

Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
      Writing prose, Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today
      And good's bad today,
      And black's white today,
      And day's night today,
      When most guys today
      That women prize today
      Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
      When you propose,
      Anything goes

When grandmama whose age is eighty
In night clubs is getting matey with gigolo's,
      Anything Goes.

When mothers pack and leave poor father
Because they decide they'd rather be tennis pros,
      Anything Goes.

If driving fast cars you like,
      If low bars you like,
      If old hymns you like,
      If bare limbs you like,
      If Mae West you like
      Or me undressed you like,
      Why, nobody will oppose!
      When every night,
      The set that's smart
Is intruding in nudist parties in studios,
      Anything Goes.

If saying your prayers you like,
      If green pears you like
      If old chairs you like,
      If back stairs you like,
      If love affairs you like
      With young bears you like,
      Why nobody will oppose!

As a transvestite myself, I couldn't possibly care less. The public schools in America are a breeding ground for misinformation and half-truths anyway.

I am sad that my country has reached such a low level of moral decadence and has no regard for GOD and HIS plan for the human race. Even if people totally deny GOD they cannot deny human anatomy. All research has proven there is no physical cause for homosexuality. It is an emotional disorder and can be corrected. It is a choice to for every homosexual to make. No one is born that way.

California kids are going to be the most confused and uneducated kids in America if they keep adding nonsense to the curricula.

The governor is definitely a crook, what mankind success has to do with their sexual orientation, this is just another tool to confuse and create promiscuity on children and I guarantee that the teachers are LGBTs. Very simple, if you don't want your children being brainwashed and molested stay away from California, LA is the porn capital and SF the LGBT Mecca.

WOW...i didnt know that there was a "gay" history...but if the Gov. wants "History To Be Honest"...maybe he should start with the story of Sodom and Gomorrah....thats pretty historical.

WHY exactly does one's sexual preference have ANYTHING to do with positive contribution to society as a whole?? I WANT EQUAL RIGHTS. California had better put GAY or STRAIGHT under the picture of EVERY individual in history text. WE STRAIGHT folks MUST not lose our RIGHTS!!

Does anyone else see the complete ARROGANCE and STUPIDITY in this???

Does anyone else feel as if this is an 'intentional' wedge being driven between the American people? It sure feels like it. It certainly looks that way by the strong one side or other comments too.

For those parents who feel that social issues such as this are important, why not implement an after school class/club or something through community education? The fact that there is no "opt-out" choice is particularly bothersome

California has a 24% illiteracy rating. When that becomes 0% and all of their students are proficient in mathematics and basic science, THEN we can begin talking about social issues. Education needs to stay removed from politics- these should be two separate entities.

      Just my 2 cents.

Who cares about Gay History. How about just American History without pointing out the person's sexual preference.
    • Mary  •  10 mths ago
How about you teach the children American History.
      • spewing_venom619 10 mths ago
They still will, but with a twist. Now the students can learn about the fashion sense of these historical figures.
      • mark 10 mths ago
Mary, surely you don't advocate teaching our children all inclusive American history. teaching children about the greatest nation on earth with no agenda, the good the bad and the ugly. that's just absurd! all education should be agenda driven and designed to indoctrinate young mind's. Ah Hell, enough with the feeble attempt at humor. the sooner this planet heals that gaping wound {California} the better off we will all be.

I'm assuming that the text books will note the sexual orientation of a person even if they were a genicidal maniac (e.g. "John Doe,a gay man, killed 3 million people in a genocidal rampage....")...or will it just be the good achievements? And will we see reference to someone in history having been heterosexual as well ("George Washington, a heterosexual man, was the first president...". This new law is an outrage and completely unnecessary. It's only a liberal, secular progressive that would care less what the sexual orientation is of someone in history. This is just one more reason my kids will NEVER see the inside of a Californian public school and why I will never vote Democrat.

Why not just teach American history ?
