California GOP governor hopefuls vie for support
BURLINGAME, Calif. (AP) — Two California Republicans who are running for governor are sticking to familiar themes and familiar faces as they try to win over new supporters at this weekend's party convention in Burlingame.
Republicans have been steadily losing support in California, and their internal debate over the direction of the party continued on Saturday.
More attendees are sporting stickers for tea party favorite Assemblyman Tim Donnelly than for former U.S. Treasury official Neel Kashkari.
Donnelly is a social conservative who advocates expanding gun rights while Kashkari is focusing on the economy and education.
Donnelly says the party's message should not change depending on the group it's targeting.
Kashkari says he wants to remake the party in California and nationally as one that is more inclusive and open to good ideas.
