California man lost in wilderness beat the odds
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A California man who walked out of the wilderness with no injuries after being lost for two bone-chilling nights didn't follow a basic rule of search-and-rescue, but he still beat the odds.
Survival specialist Skip Stoffel said Wednesday that anybody like runner Robert Root, who gets lost in the wild, should make a visible signal and stay put so rescuers can find them. Stoffel says a moving target is harder to find.
But 55-year-old Root found his way. He got lost from his running group Sunday in remote Placer County. He searched for help Monday with no success. On Tuesday, he walked up to searchers on a bridge.
Root wore a light jacket, shorts and running shoes. Rescuers say he ate energy supplements he brought on the run.
