    On the Call: Carnival exec discusses outlook

    Cruise companies traditionally keep track of their booking levels and ticket prices from quarter to quarter, which industry analysts and others look to in order to get a snapshot of consumers' appetite for spending. On Tuesday, Carnival executives were asked to give some insight into their first and second quarters.

    QUESTION: What is your confidence that your outlook for the first quarter remains stable? And what is your optimism that you can end the second quarter with pricing and occupancy up?

    ANSWER (Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer Howard Frank): "On the first quarter, and we saw this in the third quarter of 2011, our late bookings seem to be holding up quite well versus year-ago pricing. I think we feel fairly confident on where we stand on the first quarter.

    I think we are less confident in the second quarter simply because we don't have as large a percentage of our business booked in the second quarter as we have in the first quarter, naturally. And we have started to see some evidence of a booking curve coming in. I think consumers are delaying their vacation decisions.

    But at the end of the day, talking to our brand managers, they seem confident that the business will be there so I think they are more confident holding price."
