    On the Call: Disney CEO Bob Iger

    The Walt Disney Co. has long been the only major studio not to participate in a new Hollywood technology platform called UltraViolet that allows consumers to save movie purchases in online accounts so the movies can be played back on multiple devices.

    CEO Bob Iger said Tuesday that the company is likely to hold out a bit longer.

    Disney has been developing its own online locker called KeyChest, but it has been slow to roll it out. With DVD sales continuing to fall in the company's fiscal first quarter through December, Iger was asked by an analyst if he would change his mind on participating in the UltraViolet system.

    Hollywood has said that by backing up consumer purchases in online accounts, digital sales of movies could eventually grow faster

    QUESTION: I was wondering if you could just update us on your thoughts with respect to KeyChest and if you're planning on just going with that or would you also consider supporting UltraViolet.

    RESPONSE: (Iger) We still think that it would be a smart thing to offer consumers a greater interoperability because it would increase the value relationship that they would be getting when they bought either physical goods or digital goods.

    We haven't rolled out KeyChest as extensively as we hoped that we would at this point. We're in pretty significant discussions with a number of entities, as we have been for a while. But there's nothing really further to report on that.

    I don't want to sound too critical, but we're taking a wait-and-see approach on UltraViolet. I'm not suggesting that we're not open-minded about it, but so far I'm not sure that it's proven to be as robust as we'd expected or as consumer-friendly as we had hoped. Again, that's not to say that we wouldn't necessarily to consider it, but it's way too early to conclude that.
