    On the Call: Viacom CEO on Nickelodeon ratings

    NEW YORK (AP) — Viacom Inc., the parent of Nickelodeon, is blaming a September drop in Nickelodeon's viewer numbers on a measurement error by Nielsen. But the sudden plunge is having a serious impact on Viacom's ability to sell ads for the children's network.

    CEO Philippe Dauman fielded a question about the issue during a conference call with analysts Thursday.

    QUESTION: What can you say about the availability of Nickelodeon content on Netflix and what that's doing to the Nickelodeon ratings?

    DAUMAN: Well, we look at that very closely, and we don't think that the availability of the limited amount of Nickelodeon library content that we have on Netflix has had a significant impact on the ratings. Again, remember, the Netflix universe is a rather small fraction of the overall television household numbers, number one. Number two, we do get data on our streams and both the number of the Netflix subscribers and the number of Nickelodeon content streams were pretty much the same between the summer and the fall. So there's no real change that accounted for the fall's drop which we did not see in the summer. So there could have been some minimal impact, but it certainly does not account for the ratings drop that we saw.

    I don't want to belabor it because we did in the last call, but the pretty extensive set-top box data that we have does in no way reflect what we are seeing in the Nielsen measurement. That being said, you know, that's the environment we are operating in and we are going to attack as we always do, which is to go after our audience, and we'll go after that new Nielsen sample and, you know, the programs will appeal and I'm confident that as the year progresses, you will see improvement in Nickelodeon's ratings.
