Canadian man uses iPad to enter US

TORONTO (AP) — A Canadian man who realized he forgot his passport as he approached the U.S. border found a new way to gain entry — his iPad.

Martin Reisch said Tuesday a slightly annoyed U.S. border officer let him cross into the United States from Quebec after he presented a scanned copy of his passport on his Apple iPad. Reisch was a half hour from the border when he decided to try to gain entry rather than turn back and make a two-hour trek back home to Montreal to fetch his passport.

He told the officer he was heading to the U.S. to drop off Christmas gifts for his friend's kids. He said that true story, the scanned passport and his driver's license helped him get through last week.

He said the officer seemed mildly annoyed when he handed him the iPad.

"I thought I'd at least give it a try," Reisch said. "He took the iPad into the little border hut. He was in there a good five, six minutes. It seemed like an eternity. When he came back he took a good long pause before wishing me a Merry Christmas."

Reisch said the officer made an exception.

Canadians began needing more than a driver's license for identification for U.S. land border crossings in 2009. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it only accepts a passport, an enhanced driver's license or a Nexus pass from Canadian citizens entering at land crossings. The list doesn't mention facsimiles, like scans and photocopies.

A spokesman for the department did not immediately respond to questions on whether scanned passports are also commonly accepted at U.S. points of entry.

Reisch, 33, said he took a scanned photo of his passport years ago in case it was over lost or stolen while traveling. He said he also successfully used the passport on his iPad to get through Canadian Customs on the way home later that day.

He said he doubts he'd get away with it again and will bring his passport next time. But he hopes border officials will eventually make digital identification an official form of travel document. He noted that many airlines now accept digital boarding passes stored on smartphones.

"I see the future as 100 percent being able to cross with your identity on a digital device — it's just a matter of time," he said.

but the stamp made a real mess of the touch screen
      • K. 4 mths ago
Didn't even cross my mind till you mentioned it - how DO they verify your entry/exit without that stamp? Surely it's not just for our own benefit, a souvenir of our trip?

Finally....a Gov't employee who is capable of using DISCRETION. He should train the TSA.

Enough with disparaging government employees. "Private" employees in positions of semi-power perform in the same stupid ways.

How is this discretion if it's all over the internet?

It's not the Canadians that are a problem. Passport or not they aren't going to be streaming across the border. I think the officer did a nice thing, and the guy had a drivers license that could be verified so what's the big deal?

Oh, them sly Canucks, eh? They will soften us up with their clever good manners and then drown our babies in maple syrup while we sleep!
      • marshhawk 4 mths ago
Do you know how expensive maple syrup(the pure stuff) is?
        love the maple sugar candy.

There are still other reasons for stopping people at the border, i.e. smuggled contraband, produce, and animals. Customs has been around for a lot longer than our illegal immigration problem, for good reason.

So sad. When I was a kid, I lived on the border with Canada (the rest of my family still does). We didn't need any identification then. As we drove or walked over the bridge, the friendly border guard would ask our nationality and how long we'd be in Canada, we'd say "U.S., and we're just going over for a couple of ours to get ice cream and hang out", and he'd wave us on. It was awesome. We used to go over at least once a week to shop or hang out. Now my family rarely goes over there -- it's too much of a hassle what with the big line at the bridge and having to lug along a passport.

I'm 60 years old. Here in Buffalo and Niagara Falls we used to go to Fort Erie, Crystal Beach, and Clifton Hill like crossing the street! Not any more. We knew so many people and had so much fun in those days. Not any more.

I agree it would be nice if it was easier, but "lug" along a passport? Wow, difficult.

I used to live in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.....as a kid in the late 70's I used to walk over into Canada on the frozen ice with a friend....the ice on the Monoscong River...we would sometimes get trapped if an ice breaker came an broke the ice in the river......but, we would wait until it froze again and walk back. We did this from time to time when rabbit hunting....about a 2 mile walk.

There is such a thing as machine readable passport- I am sure protocol and personal initiative by the said officer as well as the Xmas spirit prevailed. The officer should be commended for his reasoned and safe initiative!!! Season's greetings ALL!!
      • oh no 4 mths ago
And if this guy came in and blew something up, you would be crying "bloody murder, this officer should lose his job blah blah blah blah".......I know your kind
      • Paul 4 mths ago
The officer will get fired. What would you think if you had done the same thing with the same officer or another officer and he/she would not let you in? It's called profiling and it's illegal, especially coming from a US government and US national security employee. The issue is that machine-readable copies should be accepted.
      • Harold 4 mths ago
Sorry I was not specific enough- the data code on the machine readable passport can be "read" even from the iPad - so his data can be pulled from the database as easily as if the real passport was available......I guess by now it is never going to ever happen again!!!

This is a story of Humanity - I commend the officer for being sensitive and responsibe. Whether or not this is the way of the future remains to be proven. With a history of trust and the longest undefended border in the world Canada and the USA are uniquely positioned to explore and define how an "electronic border" might actually work.

With the way you can photoshop images and documents on a pc.. I doubt it will ever become a legal means of entry,.. consider yourself fortunate.

Whats the big deal? If the officer wanted and had the time he could have verified the guys identify with just a few questions and a database cross reference. The officer probably found the official central database entry for the the guys passport and verified his identity. It just took the officer extra effort and was not something the officer was required to do. He did his job fine which was to verify the mans identity.

Back in 1989, I tried getting back into Canada from the US having forgotten all my ID except a US driver's license. (I was Canadian but living in the US). No passport or ID were needed but I had no document indicating I was indeed Canadian.
I chatted with the customs agent for a while and she eventually asked me where I lived in Canada. I said Toronto.

She asked me what the Pizza Pizza phone number was. I sang it for her. She let me in.

Looks like the watermarked paper, embedded holograms, "sensitive electronics" (read the inside of the back cover of a post 9-11 passport), and other security measures included in a paper passport really aren't that important after all, huh? I wonder what they're there for, then?

Sounds reasonable if the passport ID number can be checked.

Good call on the officers part!! It is nice to read a story these days where someone uses common sense instead of all the #$%$ you read about ignorant reasoning from ignorant people!!

All they need is the number off the passport to look it up. Photoshopping it wouldn't do any good because the prints wouldn't match.
