Canadian Press NewsAlert:B.C. teachers given go-ahead for 3-day walkout

VANCOUVER - B.C.'s Labour Relations Board says teachers can walk off their jobs, starting with a three-day strike, but parents need two days warning.

After that, the board ruled teachers can strike for one day a week without students experiencing too many ill effects and the whole situation will be reviewed again March 12.

The year-long contract dispute with the teachers was brought to a head last week when the government announced it would be preparing back-to-work legislation.

That legislation is to be introduced today.

Teachers have been refusing to do administrative duties, such as issuing report cards, since the school year started in September.

B.C. teachers are designated an essential service and have been conducting job action to back demands for a 15 per cent wage increase, while the province has been sticking to its mandate of negotiating public sector contracts that have no added costs.
