Canadian short-track speedskater Charles Hamelin wins World Cup bronze
NAGOYA, Japan - Canadian short-track speedskater Charles Hamelin reached the podium for the fifth consecutive race Saturday by winning bronze at the Samsung ISU World Cup at the Nippon Gaishi Arena.
He was third in the 1,500-metre final in two minutes 27.506 seconds. Byeong-Jun Kim won gold in 2:27.237 and South Korean teammate Da Woon Sin took silver in 2:27.340.
Hamelin, from Sainte-Julie, Que., now has three silver and two bronze medals this season. He has a career total of 54 World Cup medals: 18 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze.
Guillaume Bastille of Rivière-du-Loup, Que. was eighth and François Hamelin of Sainte-Julie, Que., was 10th.
Jessica Hewitt of Kamloops, B.C., just missed the podium in the women's 1,000 metres. She was fourth in 1:32.177.
Christie Elise of Great Britain won gold in 1:30.489, followed by South Koreans Min-Jung Kim (1:31.371) and Soyoun Lee (1:31.443). Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Que., was sixth and Caroline Truchon of Chicoutimi, Que., was 20th.
Russian Victor An won gold in the men's 1,000 in 1:28.344. American J.R. Celski took silver (1:28.417) and South Korean Jinkyu Noh won bronze (1:28.772).
Liam McFarlane of Medicine Hat, Alta., was fifth and Michael Gilday of Yellowknife was eighth.
Olivier Jean of Lachenaie, Que., did not compete after falling in Friday's preliminary round. He will skip this weekend's races as a precaution due to concussion-like symptoms.
Both Canadian relay teams finished third in their semifinals and did not qualify for Sunday’s final.
