A car crashed into a strip mall, caught fire and ruptured a gas line Wednesday night near 67th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Around 9:30 p.m. the Glendale Fire Department responded to the reported fire and found a car had crashed into the back of the building, catching fire after the impact, according to Steve Thompson, spokesperson for the Glendale Fire Department.

A group of bystanders had helped the driver out of the car and notified crews.

With assistance from the Phoenix Fire Department, crews started extinguishing the fire and confirmed it had not extended to surrounding buildings, but a gas line had been struck and was burning.

After crews extinguished the car fire, they removed the vehicle from the building and waited on Southwest Gas to shut down the gas line, Thompson said.

Crews also verified the building was evacuated.

The driver of the car was injured and taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported, according to Thompson.
