One found dead in car submerged in Tamarac canal, deputies say

A person was found dead inside a car that was submerged in a canal in Tamarac on Monday afternoon, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and deputies responded to the call in the area of North University Drive and Southgate Boulevard, along with Coral Springs Fire Rescue, Tamarac Fire Rescue and Coral Springs Police, said Carey Codd, a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Coral Springs Fire Rescue responded to the scene about noon. Deputy Chief Mike Moser said crews were told the car had possibly been in the canal overnight, so they did not send rescue divers to the scene.

Shortly after noon, first responders received the call in the area of the 100 block of North University Drive, near Mission Lakes Apartments, according to radio transmissions archived by the streaming site Broadcastify. The person who called for help reportedly received a photo from someone of what appeared to be a car’s bumper in the water.

Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating. Additional information has not been released.
