Carbonite buys email archiving service MailStore for $20 million
Cloud backup provider Carbonite said Monday that it acquired the email archiving service MailStore for around $20 million.
Headquartered in Viersen, Germany, MailStore says it currently serves some 22,000 businesses. Its flagship product MailStore Server creates one-to-one copies of all emails and stores them in a central place to ensure security and availability.

The business hook for the product is that users should be able to search and find important information without needing to hunt down IT for assistance.
As for Carbonite, the Boston-based company said the acquisition is in line with its global expansion plans and its goal to build out its portfolio with SMB-tailored tools.
Carbonite CEO Mohamad Ali said the plan is to integrate MailStore's email archiving and full-text search and indexing capabilities into Carbonite's product portfolio.
"Companies buy email archiving solutions to make a permanent record of every incoming and outgoing email for regulatory and compliance reasons, to protect against accidental or malicious deletion, and to make the valuable data that flows through email available to users for future access," Ali said in a statement. "We look forward to bringing this technology to more businesses so they are able to derive value from archived information."
The acquisition is expected to close by the end of this year.
