Carnival Cruise Lines has introduced the third cruise ship, the Carnival Magic, to be home ported in Galveston, Texas. The addition of the ship was marked by a celebration Sunday that included a concert by the band Maroon 5.
What are some of the specifications of the Carnival Magic?
The Carnival Magic is 1,004 feet in length and weighs 130,000 tons. She can carry 3,690 passengers and has a crew and staff of 1,367. The cruise ship includes a number of special features including a fitness center called SportsSquare and the first ropes course at sea called SkyCourse, a water park with a 312 feet water slide, separate recreations areas for adults and kids. Dining includes a steak house, an Italian restaurant, and a Caribbean style pub. Cruises will feature movies, concerts, and sporting events.
Where will the Carnival Magic Cruise?
Carnival Magic will cruise on seven day trips to the Eastern and the Western Caribbean at prices ranging from about $500 to $2,000 depending on departure date and cabin. The Eastern Caribbean cruise will make stops in Key West, Florida, and Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas. The Western Caribbean cruise will stop at Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman, and Montego Bay, Jamaica or Mahogany Bay at the Isla Roatan, Belize and at Cozumel. There will be a six day Western Caribbean cruise that will stop at Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico and Progresso in the Yucatan. There will also be an eight day Caribbean cruise that will stop at Costa Maya, Mexico, Belize, Mahogany Bay at the Isla Roatan, and at Cozumel. The first Caribbean cruise will depart on November 27.
How will the home porting of the Carnival Magic affect the Galveston economy?
Galveston hopes to generate $10 million and 100,000 visitors a year due to the creation of the port as a place of embarkation for cruise ships. This is an important consideration during a time of economic malaise.
What efforts has Galveston been making to attract a cruise industry to the city?
The port has recently completed renovations costing $12.5 million to improve the terminal in order to accommodate cruise ships the size of the Carnival Magic. Improvements have been ongoing since 2004.
What other cruise ships are using Galveston as a port of embarkation?
The Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas started making cruises out of Galveston last week. The Disney Magic and the Crown Princess are expected to start conducting cruises out of Galveston in September and December of 2012, respectively.
