    The Carroll Center for the Blind Receives Grant for Addition of New Apple Training Lab

    The Carroll Center for the Blind has received a $25,000 grant from the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Foundation to equip a new Apple Training lab and develop online courses that will enable people who are blind or have low vision to independently use Apple products with Zoom and Voiceover applications

    The Carroll Center for the Blind has received a $25,000 grant from the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Foundation to equip a new Apple Training lab and develop online courses that will enable people who are blind or have low vision to independently use Apple products with Zoom and Voiceover applications.

    With the new Apple Training Lab The Carroll Center will expand their technology training services for the blind and visually impaired Apple products. Apple has added accessibility features that include Zoom, a screen magnification application and Voiceover, a screen reader application, to their newer products making them attractive to consumers with vision loss. These technologies include the MacBook and iMac computers, iPhone, iPad 2 and iPod Touch. The Carroll Center will also train professionals who work with children and adults who are visually impaired. According to Carroll Center Technology Director Brian Charlson “The use of an iPhone, iPad 2 and iPod Touch will make it easier for an individual to use the Internet, live independently and communicate with their co-workers, friends and family.”

    “This is an incredibly generous gift from the Shapiro Family Foundation to the blind and visually impaired community,” said Carroll Center President Joseph F. Abely. “This state-of-the-art lab will enable the Carroll Center’s staff to train others so that they are able to stay in step with their peers in academic settings and on the job. It’s all about keeping the blind and visually impaired on par with their colleagues – whether in the classroom or in a job setting. The blind and visually impaired are just as capable – sometimes, more so – than their peers with vision, so it is incredibly important that they keep up with the ever-evolving world of accessible technology.”

    The Carroll Center serves newly-blind and visually-impaired people of all ages by providing them with the skills training, technology and education they need to live, learn and work independently. Founded by Father Thomas Carroll, the Carroll Center is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

    The Carl and Ruth Shapiro Foundation, founded in 1961, supports Arts and Culture, Education, Health and Hospitals, Jewish Causes and Social Welfare programs primarily in Greater Boston. The Carroll Center’s Apple Training Lab is part of the Foundation’s Disability Inclusion Initiative, a program area focused on assisting individuals with disabilities as they strive to achieve independence, community integration and a better quality of life.
