Cars circle central Moscow in anti-Putin protest

MOSCOW (AP) — Hundreds of cars circled central Moscow during an opposition demonstration on Sunday to demand that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin allow free elections in Russia.

As they traveled along the wide Garden Ring, which makes a 16-kilometer (nearly 10-mile) loop around the Kremlin, the cars flew the white ribbons and balloons that have become a symbol of the peaceful anti-Putin protest movement. One family held up their little white dog in an open, passenger's side window.

Sunday's demonstration took place two weeks before the presidential election, which Putin is expected to win. Although none of his four challengers poses a serious threat, Putin does need to get a majority of the vote to avoid a runoff.

A similar protest in support of Putin late Saturday drew what police said were 2,000 cars.

Putin's supporters have been trying to counter the opposition protests by showing that they too can bring people out onto the street. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend a pro-Putin rally in Moscow on Thursday, a national holiday.

The largest protests the country has seen in two decades began in December following a parliamentary election that was manipulated to boost the results for Putin's party.

G.W. Bush once said: "who is not with us, is against us". This means that United States and EU will not stop until they destroy any country which does not agree to become US vassal, offering itself as a banana republic to US government and US companies' interests.
Look at what happened to Serbia, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc. (They broke their teeth on Vietnam though). Hitler did the same thing in the name of Arian supremacy, US is doing it in the name of "democracy". While Americans have no clue what democracy is, having had 200 years of slavery, segregation and Indian genocide, and two completely identical fascist parties, Republians and Democrats, the essence remains the same: world domination and turning every human into a nonthinking slave of the regime. Yahoo news, just like Reuters, AP, New York Times, etc. is not meant to be news. It's a giant propaganda and disinformation machine to achieve one goal: brainwash, deceive and create obedient zombies, who are really slaves but believe they are free. Just like all Americans.

In Iraq, US Marines entered a family house, raped a little girl while the parents where made to look on, then torched the whole family. The stories like this abound. Look at Abu Ghraib pictures. Americans are absolute pigs, worse than Nazis, and you have the temerity to criticize other countries! Everybody should be ashamed off being an American. 200 years off slavery or segregation and Indian Genocide. 30 mln Indians murdered. Nazi-like laws signed just a month ago allowing indefinite detention of US citizens. A nation of brainwashed slaves.

Russia does not have an income tax on individual income and the cost of living is half of the US, so you have to multiply their salary by 4, in addition there is no mortgage or rent because the government gave everybody dachas and apartments. I can see why they would vote for Putin.
I . Under Putin the annual decrease of population by 600-800k was reversed and Russia experiences growth in the last 3 years.
      2. Gross domestic product grew by a factor of 7, real salaries grew by a factor of 4.
      3. Oligarchs and mafia were brought to heel, some in jail, some left the country.
      4. Russian airplanes (civilian and military)& ballistic missiles are best in the world.
      5. Russia has the largest oil production in the world, is the largest wheat exporter and the largest natural gas producer.
      Compare to US;
      1. Adopted a law that allows an indefinite detention of US citizens and their torture.
      2. Introduced humiliating body scans and security checks at the airports.
      3. Killed and tortured hundreds of thousand of civilians in numerous countries.
      4. Obama administration has adopted numerous laws to increase pollution and curtail civil rights in US.
      5. Crackdown on OWS movement in the most cruel way.
      6. Rise in unemployment is dramatic.
      7. US has the lowest math and science profficiency in the developed world.
      8. 12 mln children in US don't have enough food.
      9. US has the highest cost of health care in the world and the highest rate of uninsured people in the developed world..

doubtful . . if knucklehead socialist Obama is re-elected, you can rest assured the corrupt spend and redistribute crowd will get another term as well.

Don't put your faith in a process that has long been conpromised and is a failure. You representative don't represent YOUR interests, so why do you vote. They say it's your civic duty to vote. If you don't you haven't any reason to complain. However, if I do vote, don't I have to take responsibility for what happens? Too much responsibility for one person to handle, so I don't vote. Will be writing in Ron Paul for a second straight election though.

A Russian up spring? Very cool. Time to push Putin out. I wish we could do the samething here with our congressional members, who are the biggest crooks in the country.

Highly unlikely, most people still see the effects of the orange revolution in Ukraine and the rose revolution in Georgia and they don't see the change they want. In Ukraine the politicians had a chance to make a difference but they just stuffed money in there pockets and tried to kill each other (poisoning incident). In Georgia there president started a war that has lead to more economic difficulty for that country. The only place I would think that has any chance of government replacement is Belarus but the people there are really passive and it will be many years before anything happens there.
      • Antonius 3 mths ago
Those places were starting from scratch. That's not the case here. Here we "only" need to undo things from the last ten to thirty years.

Todd O, the fact is we all want to see members of the house and senate ousted, nearly 3 quarters of the population. The real problem is, over 50% of the population think that their current congressman is doing a good job. We all want to see new congressman but we are fine with our own representatives. It won't change.

The American people are too cowardly to stand up for their rights of which they are losing a light speed. Very refreshing to see the Russians standing up for their rights.
      • Jew-el 3 mths ago
I wouldn't say "cowards" just ....maybe too comfortable and somewhat lazy.

Let me get this right. LB says we should have demonstrations and anti-demonstrations to voice our furor over an election? Whatever happened to turnover of power without violence?

People should be leary of anyone who thinks they are the only one who can run the country. It is the responsible thing to stand aside and support the next elected leader. It is irresponsible and megalomaniacal to twist rules in order to regain the position.

There is no such a thing as an honest politician anywhere in the world. Hell, the US is bad enough what do I care about the others? Not one #$%$ thing. Everyone just bend over and take it like the politicians mean for us to take it.
