Catholic bishops oppose casino gambling in Ky.

Kentucky's Catholic bishops worry that legalizing casinos would lead to 'catastrophic losses'

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Catholic bishops in Kentucky have issued a stern warning about the potential consequences if lawmakers approve a proposal to legalize casinos.

The Rev. Patrick Delahanty, executive director of the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, distributed a letter to state senators on Tuesday detailing the unanimous concerns of the state's four bishops who represent some 400,000 parishioners in the state.

"With their flashing lights, free-flowing alcoholic drinks, all-night hours and generally intoxicating atmosphere, casinos are more likely than other gambling options to lead to bad decisions and catastrophic losses for patrons, particularly those prone to problem or compulsive gambling," Delahanty wrote in the two-page letter, distributed a day before the issue is to be considered by a Senate committee.

The letter was on behalf of Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Bishop Roger J. Foys of Covington, Bishop Ronald W. Gainer of Lexington and Bishop William F. Medley of Owensboro.

Gambling opponents, including the Kentucky Council of Churches and the Kentucky Baptist Convention, have been working feverishly to try to defeat Gov. Steve Beshear's proposal for a constitutional amendment that would allow up to seven casinos to open in the state.

The proposal is tentatively scheduled for a vote Wednesday in the Senate Committee on State and Local Government.

Beshear used a weekly address on Friday to promote his gambling proposal, one of the centerpieces of his re-election campaign last year. He is calling on lawmakers to approve a proposed constitutional amendment during the current legislative session so that it could be put on the ballot for November for voters to ratify or reject.

"Opponents of expanded gaming should not deny their fellow citizens the right to vote on this issue," he said.

Beshear said Kentuckians are gambling hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in neighboring states, including Illinois, Indiana and West Virginia.

"This money funds their schools, their libraries, their police departments, and other improvement," Beshear said Friday. "It makes no sense to continue watching that happen."

Delahanty said allowing casinos to open would be especially harmful to the poor, who often turn to casinos in hopes of solving their financial problems.

He pointed to a four-year-old University of Kentucky study that said the state's poorest residents would be among those most at risk of become compulsive gamblers.

"For those who are struggling to make ends meet, casino gambling can provide an attractive means to relieve financial burdens, which ultimately only leads to crushing debt and personal crisis," Delahanty wrote.

    ___

The legislation is Senate Bill 151.

      An Atheist's Holiday
An atheist became incensed over Christmas holiday preparations. He filed a lawsuit about the constant celebrations given to Christians and Jews while atheists had no holiday to celebrate.

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the long, passionate presentation by the atheist's lawyer, the judge banged his gavel and declared, "Case dismissed!"

The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the ruling. "Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter, and many other observances. Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur, and Hanukkah. Yet, my client and all other atheists have no such holiday!"

The judge leaned forward in his chair and simply said, "Obviously, your client is too confused to know about, much less celebrate, his own atheist holiday!"

The lawyer pompously said, "Your honor, we are unaware of any such holiday for atheists. Just when might that holiday be?"

The judge replied, "Well, it comes every year on exactly the same date. Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, if your client says there is no God then, according to the Bible, he is a fool. April Fool's Day is his holiday. Now, get out of my courtroom!"

Any community that's added casino gambling has seen a rise in bankruptcies, foreclosures, and other serious money related problems. It's a bad idea and a losing one for state government. Every church I know of is against it for that reason.

Of course, the secularists are using this to bash religion. If you really wanted to help people and prevent exploitation and financial disaster for thousands, you'd join us. I can only assume you think that the most exploitative and negative 'business' in America is a good thing.

Churches shouldn't be involved in politics. Period.

Why? They have the same right of expression as any other group.

Every church I know of is against stuff like this... not because of the reasons you mentioned but because it's a sin in their eyes. Thus by trying to hinder the process of legalizing gambling, they are simply (once again) trying to impose their regligious beliefs on others. Sure, gambling is not good for most people, but for some it is a form of entertainment and brings money to the state. If someone poorly chooses to gamble to try and get ahead.... then it's their loss.

Why should I try to help people prevent exploitation and financial disaster when it's none of my concern what they do with their free time and money. I'm not their father.

These religious idiots get kickbacks from Kentucky's thriving horseracing gambling industry to be against other forms of gambling, all while Indiana's casinos rake in millions straight out of Kentucky.

The catholic church has always tried to enslave poor people who are unfortunate enough to be catholic. They want them to have a many children as possible and give their money to the church. They don't want the state cutting into their revenue stream.

The RCC wants to fight gambling? Move the focus to Vegas. Or Atlantic City. Or California's Native American casinos. Or "riverboat" casinos on the Mississippi. No? The RCC KNOWS fighting GENUINE gambling meccas would flop. Instead of fighting a legitimate battle against gambling, they're picking a target of opportunity. Hey, I've got an idea: the RCC wants to legislate morality? Better take on NEVADA -- prostitution is LEGAL there.

Scientifically proving the nonexistence of god
      (A thought experiment)

      Hypothesis:
Either God is supernatural bereft from all actions in the bible or God is natural and the bible actually happened.

      Test & Result:
With God being supernatural; then it’s outside of anyone’s reality so it can’t and doesn’t have an effect in the reality that it is supernatural to. If the God was able to affect that the natural reality then the God wouldn’t be supernatural it would be natural therefore proving the first claim to be incorrect.

With God being real and everything in the bible did actually happen. Then why does the church want you to have acquiescence in God’s supposed environmental effect on your reality. It’s your reality regardless of your belief in God proving the second claim to be erroneous.

Must humanity be locked to the past destined to reiterate the skeletons of failure? Reality is just whole bunch of random events that has coalesced into a crescendo of time space. It is humans that asks why; not nature. Humanity did once believed that the biblical god in the bible has authority over the world because it created the world in 6 days; 77 generations before the time of Jesus and hit the reset button with a global flood, around 2500BC. Since, no one can cognitively agree on an exact time frame of earth’s creation; except for the science of geology. Those events in the bible never actually happened therefore the god as described in the bible DOES NOT EXISTS. Time to stop fooling yourselves there is more credible evidence to believe in aliens then God. The Biblical God is a fallacy, a mythical creature of individualized creation. The laws of physics, matter and energy, are what explain reality they are the laws of reality derived from repeated experimentation not from an old book of misconceived notions that was written by human ancestors that are believed it to be correct because it was said to be correct by the use of polysyllabic words that were imbued in error to have godly power. It’s the meaning of the words that structure and have intimate influence on the perceivers’ reality negating the need for an omnipotent deity's omniscient understanding.

The Biblical God DOES exist! The laws of physics, matter and energy are mostly "theories". Scientists try to prove how the world works and how the earth and universe was formed. But they can only theorise. They have NO way of proving these theories. But they keep on trying to convince the world that they are right and the Bible is wrong. You will find out at the end of time you will find that God does exist.
      • TTopperr 3 mths ago
The Biblical God is a fallacy, a mythical creature of individualized creation. You claim it to exist so to you it does exist making it it apparent to you and you alone; other fellow believers also see there own apparent mythical creature of there own individualized creation. The Biblical God is relative and different to each individual person so no one can agree on what god is other then a feeling. Feelings and subjective to and only pertain to that individual; proving that God is a fallacy.
