    The Native Roots Artists Guild (NRAG) brings the rich culture for which Native American Artists are known at the 34th Annual Falling Leaves Festival in Salamanca, NY on September 30 – October 2.

    The Native Roots Artists Guild (NRAG) brings you the rich culture for which Native American Artists are known at the 34th Annual Falling Leaves Festival in Salamanca, NY on September 30 – October 2. Come out and welcome in the autumn season and enjoy traditional and contemporary arts and crafts produced by Native American artists. View stunning interpretations of ancient potters, hand carvings, paintings, beadwork designs or view the symbolism captured from traditional native stories and legends.

    “For the survival of the Native American culture, it is important to focus on our identity and retain our culture. Being a part of the Native Roots Artist Guild helps us to keep it alive. Having the opportunity to share our culture at the Falling Leaves Festival gives us the opportunity to promote ourselves as talented artists as well as educate the public about our unique culture,” said Carson Waterman, an artist and member of the Native Roots Artist Guild.

    “We are proud to have the Native Roots Artist Guild at this year’s Falling Leaves Festival. In addition to the Guild, there will be Seneca story tellers, dancers, cultural demonstrations, Seneca food and more. Everyone who comes out will certainly enjoy their experience,” said Jenny Ingrao, Member Services and Events Manager for the Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce. “We are in a community full of rich culture and heritage and we can’t wait to share its hidden treasures.”

    About the Native Roots Artists Guild


    Native Artists continue to carry on their traditions and beliefs and are eager to share their proud heritage with the Greater Western New York and surrounding communities. The Native


    Roots Artists Guild's mission is to maintain a support network for Native Haudenosaunee artists, perpetuate native culture, and promote community awareness and appreciation of native arts. The guild ensures the beauty, quality, and collectability of authentic native artisan made products that make each piece of artwork a unique reflection of Native American heritage.

    Special Presentation by Terry Jones


    There will also be a special presentation by Terry Jones, a commercial photographer and filmmaker whose primary goal is to portray contemporary Native American society through film, video and still photography. Jones will be screening his short videos, which have included several works on Seneca foods, followed by food tastings. Short videos will include What the Hell Is Corn Soup? and Frybread: A Traumedy, in which he also starred. View his short films. In other works he explores the struggle to retain Indian identity in his community. Thomas Indian School Reunion documents one of the annual gatherings of former students at the residential school and orphanage, which ran from 1855 – 1956 on the Seneca reservation. He also produced and edited a five-part series on artists for the Gallery/Museum of the American Indian Community House in New York City.

    In 2005, Jones attended the Institute of American Indian Arts Summer Film and Television Workshop where he was awarded an ABC/Disney Talent Development Fellowship for his feature-length screenplay, Salem (working title), about a 14-year-old girl’s experience in residential boarding school in the 1940s, which is under option to Disney. He is currently in-development with Casino Nation, a documentary about the impact of the introduction of a casino on the community, which has received funding support from Native American Public Telecommunications, POV-The American Documentary, Independent Television Service, Lucius & Eva Eastman Fund, Sundance Documentary Fund and New York State Council for the Arts.

    Jones has served as a panelist for the New York State Council for the Arts. From 2005 to 2009 he was on the Board of Directors at the American Indian Community House, serving as Vice-Chairman and Secretary. Jones grew up and is currently living in the Cattaraugus territory of the Seneca Nation of Indians in western New York, where he is developing projects concerned with Seneca language and culture.
