    Celebrities and VIP's Turn Out for Fresh stART Benefit to Raise Money for At Risk Youth

    7th Annual fresh stART art sale raises almost $100,000 for LA’s BEST

    fresh stART Honorary Co-Chairperson Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”), producer/director Judd Apatow (“Bridesmaids”) & Leslie Mann (“Knocked Up”), Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”), writer/producer Alex Kurtzman (“Star Trek,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”), Jena Malone (“Contact”), Jennifer Westfeldt (“Kissing Jessica Stein”), writer Ed Soloman (“Men in Black”), director Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl”) and director Curtis Hanson (“LA Confidential”) came out to support the 7th Annual fresh stART art show on Saturday, February 4, which raised almost $100,000 for at risk youth.

    Founded in 2001, fresh stART, the annual fundraising event of the McCall Family Foundation, is a one-night art exhibition and sale. “I knew a lot of people in Los Angeles who were interested in collecting art but didn't know where to start,” said Founder Cris McCall, “And I was committed to raising money for art programs for at risk kids. So I decided to create an event where the artwork was carefully curated and affordable, so anyone who came could find work they loved without the fear-of-mistakes factor, all while supporting children in need.”

    With the support of such loyal benefactors as this year’s Honorary Co-Chairpersons William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman, fresh stART has grown yearly from a 2,000 square foot space and 400 attendees in 2001 to this year’s 20,000 square foot space at Santa Monica Art Studios‘ Arena 1 Gallery and twice the number of guests. Macy and Huffman have attended the annual event since 2006 and this year Huffman went home with a beautiful piece by Los Angeles artist, Ramis Kim.

    The money raised from this year’s event will benefit LA’s BEST, an organization founded in 1988 by Mayor Tom Bradley to provide a safe and supervised after school education, enrichment and recreation program for elementary school children ages 5 to 12 in the City of Los Angeles. fresh stART’s donation will support the LA’s BEST ASAP Program (After School Arts Program), which provides visual and performing arts education and experiences for children who would otherwise lack exposure to the arts.

    Over 200 artists participated ranging from established names to emerging artists whose careers are on the rise.  This year’s featured artists include such highly regarded talents as Anthony Friedkin, Aaron Morse, Martin McMurray, and Augusta Wood as well as such up-and-coming artists as Richard Colman, Brendan Monroe, and Daniel Cummings.

    Founded in 2001, fresh stART, the annual fundraising event of the McCall Family Foundation, is a one-night art exhibition and sale with two distinct goals. Our primary goal is to fund programs that provide arts-related therapies to children designated "at-risk." Secondly, fresh stART strives to stimulate the arts in Los Angeles by providing potential collectors with a personal connection to both established and emerging artists. The McCall Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3). Sources of funding include the benefit exhibition and private and corporate donations. fresh stART operates wholly through the efforts of volunteers.

    LA’s BEST was created in 1988 by Mayor Tom Bradley to address an alarming rise in the lack of adequate supervision of children during the critical after school hours. LA’s BEST serves 28,000 children every day at 186 elementary school sites in Los Angeles in neighborhoods most vulnerable to gangs, drugs, crime and at schools with the lowest student test scores.
