Census releases data on American Indian population

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Almost half of American Indians and Alaska Natives identify with multiple races, representing a group that grew by 39 percent over a decade, according to U.S. Census data released Wednesday.

Of the 5.2 million people counted as Natives in 2010, nearly 2.3 million reported being Native in combination with one or more of six other race categories, showcasing a growing diversity among Natives. Those who added black, white or both as a personal identifier made up 84 percent of the multi-racial group.

Tribal officials and organizations look to Census data for funding, to plan communities, to foster solidarity among tribes and for accountability from federal agencies that have a trust responsibility with tribal members.

The bump in the multi-racial group from 1.6 million in 2000 to nearly 2.3 million in 2010 was higher than that of those who reported being solely of Native descent.

"When information comes out and is available for our tribes and tribal communities, we have a lot of issues going back to identity," said Mellor Willie, executive director of the National American Indian Housing Council. "Who is Indian?"

The Census figures, released during a presentation at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., also include people living in the United States who consider themselves indigenous to Central and South America. Tribal officials say it's the best snapshot of Native people available, but the data is often supplemented with tribal enrollment figures or other surveys and studies.

Amber Ebarb, with the National Congress of American Indians' Policy Research Center, said the data also is used to track trends among states and regions, determine the mobility patterns of Natives and figure out how best to deliver services to Natives or conduct outreach.

"It's kind of a function of geography," she said. "There's this trend where single-race American Indians live in tribal communities and multi-race Natives live farther."

The Blackfeet Nation in Montana had the highest proportion of people who reported being part of more than one racial group or tribe at 74 percent. Among Alaska Native groups, the Tlingit-Haida had the highest proportion of mixed-race Natives at 42 percent.

The number of Natives identifying with at least one other race increased in all but three states from 2000 to 2010, according to the Census.

Some tribes were less diverse. Of the 34,000 people who identify as Yup'ik, an Alaska Native tribe, 29,000 said they were affiliated with no other race. The Navajo Nation, whose reservation stretches into New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, had the highest proportion of people who identified as Native and nothing else at 86 percent of its 332,000 population, Census officials said.

The Navajo Nation comes in second in population behind the Cherokee's 819,000 population, 65 percent of whom identify with another race.

Census Director Robert Groves said the bureau has projected that the overall Native population will increase to 6.8 million in 2030 and about 8.6 million in 2050. Both multiracial Natives and Natives alone grew at a rate higher from 2000 to 2010 than the U.S. population at large.

    Among other findings:

—Seventy-eight percent of Natives live off tribal reservations but many live in counties close to reservations, particularly throughout the West, including Oklahoma.

—The majority of Natives live in 10 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington.

—The population of multi-racial Natives jumped by more than 50 percent in 18 states, and by more than 70 percent in North Carolina, Delaware and South Dakota.

I am proud to be an American Indian and the heritage that I have. I am a combat vet and proud of that as well. My family left the reservation when I was very young to look for a better life. I returned later and worked with others and helped assist people make a better life for themselves. I was called a half breed many times when I was young. I understand but life is what I made it and not what others tried to make for me.

you probably looked more European, i doubt you would have the same success if you were dark skinned, in this country only the light skin races do well because of discrimination..

One of the greatest experiences I've had as as veteran was to shake the hand of a Navajo Code Talker and to thank him for his service.

Did you wrap your hand in a plastic bag so that the taint would never wear off?
      • David 3 mths ago
To shake the hand of a Navajo Code Talker, what a great honor. I urge you my brother to note that in a diary or journal. It should be passed down from generation to generation. An honor that great is hard to compare with. Skyghost

My heritage includes Osage, German, Irish, Scottish, English, Swedish and French. Guess that makes me an American!

No, being an American makes you an American!
Unfortunately, most Americans don't act like Americans.

Proud to be 100% Dine. As a military vet(Served in both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan), a member of two families of Code Talkers(WWII), college graduate, government contractor, and tax-paying Patriot it makes me sad to have served for a country I love with all my heart and STILL read all of these racist and hateful posts everyday.
I get it. You hate us and what we represent. Is it not enough I learned your language and prospered in this great Country in the 21st century? Would you all rather have us all exterminated and gone? I've come far from a struggling child from a 3rd world reservation. We don't have opportunities like these inner city kids who "think" they had it hard. Most reservations are rougher than most ghettos and we overcame.
I love this country and most in it. There was a time I would've taken a bullet for anyone of you but after I came home from the Middle East I feel ashamed.

      • A Yahoo! User 4 mths ago
The government hates you. The only people who care about the Native interests are the Natives themselves, and even then we see more and more of non-direct lineage or half-breeds trying to push the agenda of their other racial group. Ethnic cleansing, of some form, is the only way to preserve your kind.
      • D 4 mths ago
I don't think anyone really hates Natives, but we do resent this idea of dual citizenship. By that, I mean living in America and being granted all the freedoms and rights that that offers, but at the same time, having tribal laws that trump our nation's laws.

If a Native American commits murder, they can seek refuge on a reservation. Despite certain salmon species being endangered, they can put nets across the river and take as many salmon as they desire, which they turn around and sell. In fact, there are agreements with the US that we must give salmon to Native tribes, which they turn around and sell. In other words, we have hatcheries, breeding fish, just to give to Native tribes so that they can sell them for a profit. Those kinds of things, we resent.

My grandmother was born in Oklahoma when it was still called "Indian Territory". My Grandfather was a Nebraska Sioux. I am a wartime veteran, and proud to have served this great country. But as I watch it being destroyed from within, the only way it could ever be defeated, I am very sad. I pray that freedom loving Americans will not allow this to happen.

We have a huge population in Oklahoma, 2nd or 3rd for those identifying as native american-- and we don't have reservations. So no, most don't live near reservations. Not surprising either about multi-racial reporting; we have few pureblood native americans in our state since the populations are widely dispersed in the general population. Most who have tribal membership don't necessarily even look to have native american blood.

While we should all be proud of our heritage, the idea of hyphenated Americans is one of the major problems dividing America. I am a legal third generation American first and foremost and hold my heritage proudly in my heart.

Well I was once told by an old Navajo that I was most likely a member of one of the to biggest tribes in the USA the smaller of the two is the Wannabe tribe and the bigger of the two is the Outtaluck tribe...LOL

Why can't we just all be AMERICANS!!!!!! Why does the government insists on dividing us up into groups. To promote racism???
    • paradise  •  4 mths ago
I'm part Native American and proud of it, but I don't use the way I was born to try and get special treatment. Today, even the gays call themselves a minority and demand special privileges. When are we all going to see ourselves as simply Americans, and equal to everyone else? We need to stop the panhandling and vying for extra privileges? At this point in history, why should one group, owe anything to another group? We should expect better of ourselves.
    • Jay  •  Minneapolis, Minnesota  •  4 mths ago
It is so sad that we spend so much time dividing ourselves along our grandfather's past instead of working on being brothers now and into the future.
    • Marc  •  Escondido, California  •  4 mths ago
I found out when I was young that my grandmother's grandmother was full blood American Indian. I also found out that my grandmother's grandfather basicly purchased her from the catholic orphanage where she lived...her family had been wiped out. I wonder how many of us have some native blood in us? For a long time, if you were a mixed breed, it was frowned upon.

I remember growing up in Oklahoma that each yr the principle would beg students being no more than1/16th Indian to sign up as one so the school could get more tax money -- that was about 50 yrs ago and it looks like things are getting even more silly.

Do you think that more Native Americans are claiming to be part of other races, or other races are claiming to be part Native American? (Do you really think Native Americans increased 39% in ten years when the entire country grew by 3%?)

I thought they were Native Americans??..this is not India..remember,they were here FIRST!!!!!!! the European's came over here and decided to take this country, and to HELL,with the people who tught them out to stay alive. Both my husband and myself ar descendent's of Cherokee and Navajo..but we are 100% American.

This statistic is deceiving. Im 1/16 Chickasaw indian and everything else European (white is not really an accurate term). Anyways i have blonde hair, blue eyes, and fare skin and ive learned through some phone calls that even i can be admitted as a citizen of the chickasaw tribe if i want to! What a joke!
    • Nononono  •  4 mths ago
Wow, I had no clue people still felt this way. I was surprised to see that there are reservations in Oklahoma? Hmmm. I have lived with them all my life and it sure hasn't be on or anywhere close to a reservation. Without the Chickasaws where I live, we would dry up and blow away. They keep this place humming, smart business people and take great care of their people as well as their community.

What I've found here is a lot of people with misguided knowledge they've learned from a government that wants to hided the truth at all costs. What fills may heart with pain and sadness is that many of you have Native American in you,but you've learned to hate a race of people you don't even understand. Before you even try to understand who we are as a people you need to free yourself from all the hate you have for yourself and us who've been here for Thousands of years, before any other race came here. There are a lot of just plain stupid people in this Nation we call America today. The Native Americans never sold this Nation to the US Government,The corruption we have today in this Government is the very same corruption my Elders and Ancestor have always had.At gun point and thousands of Troopers the Native Americans were forced off the land/farms out of their homes. I can hear your voices and words when you read this saying to bad for those savages. If you've not listened to all the lie's you learned in school and have done your own research. You'll find that every Native American Tribe has always had their own Laws and Government. To help you understand even more The United States Constitution is Native American the Founding Fathers like it so much it became the Master outline for the Constitution this government is today 2012 tasting it to take all your freedoms and Liberties away.If you don't think your rights to freedom of speck is Important then sit on your hands and keep your mouth shut and sooner than later you wouldn't have it any more. What I'm saying to you is every race of people in what we now call America is under attack by all the Corrupted Politicians in Washington DC,Every State and Local Government. I for one hope and pray all American people wake the EUCK-UP....If your in the 1% then you don't care about those in the 99%. If your in the 99% you need to put away all your hated for other races, and take a stand for your Freedom and Civil Rights and Liberties. It's 2012 and time is running out on the people. We need real change in this Government and we don't need another 4 years of Obama,we don't need Romney he's as bad as Obama they have the same Masters Golden-Sachs. Newt is even worries his Masters are the NWO. Ricky S is know better is Masters are Wall Street. Then we come to Dr.Ron Paul who wants to keep the Constitution and Restore America. I hate this Government has much as many other Americans do....But I do love the people,I've learned much from all races of people.... But if you like your freedoms and your liberties and have children, grandchildren like I do then we must stand up together as one,are we all will die.The world is watching. I must tell all those who have or they are serving as a Police office are Military person,Remember the Oath you took to protect the American citizens from all enemies foreign and domestic. If Obama does order Marshall Law,we as a Nation must stand as one. The corrupted 1% don't care what color of skin you are. {Petunia } I would say you need to find out more about both sides of your parents.Starting with your Birth Cert. Then look for the Morons Archives that are in Salt Lake City in Utah. The Morons are the very best way to find out how many Native American you truly are. You may have to travel there and do your Research. Good Luck. LOL....
