CenturyLink bulks up its cloud, buys Cognilytics

Telecom provider CenturyLink made its second acquisition this week with the purchase of Cognilytics, which provides big data and analytics services. CenturyLink this week also bought DataGardens, which provides disaster recovery as a service, as a service.

CenturyLink's cloud strategy has revolved around the acquisitions of Savvis, Tier3 and AppFog and now the company is filling in strategic areas. Terms of the Cognilytics and DataGardens deals weren't disclosed.

Cognilytics provides analytics and data visualization tools to midmarket customers. The company implements Hadoop as well as SAP's HANA platform. For CenturyLink both tools are an avenue to enterprise customers.

In a statement, SAP CEO Bill McDermott said the deal aligns CenturyLink with the software giant's strategy. Gary Gauba, founder and CEO of Cognilytics, will stick around as leader of the unit within CenturyLink.

Cognilytics targets the healthcare, retail, manufacturing, financial services and oil and gas industries.
