CEO of Russian Natural Gas Giant Gazprom Will Run His Company from a $3 Million Tablet

Alexei Miller, the CEO of Russian natural gas giant Gazprom, will soon own a tablet worth 114 million rubles. That's about $3 million USD. The tablet was exclusively designed for him, and is based on Apple's iOS operating system. The design has taken over a year to complete and Miller will be presented with the device in August.

This might seem like an exorbitant amount to pay for an iPad-style device and that's because it is. That's because it's also an extremely secure device and essentially a mobile workstation from which Miller can monitor and control Gazprom remotely. The tablet completely matches his in-office desktop workstation.

The designs for the tablet specified it be able to start in no more than five seconds, support 3G, GPRS, and Wi-Fi, and be able to monitor all of Gazprom's businesses, such as production, exports and generation. In the event of hardware failure, the maximum restoration time is four hours.

While knowledge of the tablet's creation has been public for sometime, ITAR-TASS has just discovered what the $3 million device cannot do. Miller's tablet will have only restricted access to Gazprom's confidential data. Because of the company's corporate policies, even the CEO cannot have access to all of their confidential information on his mobile device.

A Gazprom spokesperson told ITAR-TASS, "At present, Gazprom doesn’t use mobile communication networks when processing confidential data. The processing of information constituting a trade secret, as well as of other confidential data may be done only on desktop computers."

Considering it has taken over a year to create and costs over $3 million, we really hope Miller likes his very, very fancy iPad-ish. The device is still second to Stuart Hugh's gold, diamond encrusted, and dinosaur bone adorned iPad, which is over $8 million.
