Changing of the Guard: Google topples Microsoft as top U.S. web browser maker

It has been a long time coming, and now it has finally happened: Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is no longer the most widely used web browser in the United States. According to the latest Adobe Digital Index for the month of April, Google’s Chrome browser has unseated Internet Explorer in the U.S., accounting for 31.8% of all web browser usage during the month. Adobe’s data shows that Internet Explorer’s browser share was 30.9% in April.

Of note, Adobe’s data combines desktop browsing data with smartphone and tablet browsing, so the numbers don’t come as much of a surprise considering the current state of Microsoft’s mobile business.

Adobe said that Apple’s Safari browser was the third most used in April with 25% of the U.S. market, and Mozilla’s Firefox came in at No. 4 with just 8.7%.

“Today, mobile [operating systems are] more important, giving Google and Apple a leg up with default status on Android and iOS,” Adobe analyst Tyler White said, according to a report from Computerworld.
