Chavez heads to Cuba for urgent tumor removal

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez bid an emotional farewell laced with references to Jesus Christ and independence hero Simon Bolivar Friday as he departed Venezuela for Cuba for urgent surgery to remove a tumor he says is probably malignant.

Clasping the hand of his youngest daughter, Chavez addressed allies of his socialist political movement and troops standing at attention at the Miraflores presidential palace.

"I say this from my gut: With cancer or without cancer ... come rain, thunder or lightning ... nobody can avoid a great patriotic victory Oct. 7," the president said, refering to the date of Venezuela's presidential elections.

    "Long live Chavez!" he cried.

The socialist president, who is seeking re-election, spoke of the tribulations of Bolivar and the burdens borne by Christ.

Chavez, 57, is turning to the same Cuban doctors who extracted a baseball-size cancerous tumor from his pelvic region last summer. This time, the growth is smaller, about an inch (two centimeters) in diameter.

The president has not disclosed the precise location of either tumor, nor said what kind of cancer he had.

Chavez's black SUV then left the palace and rolled slowly through the capital, with red-shirted bodyguards clinging to the running boards. His head and shoulders sticking out of the sunroof, the firebrand president waved to onlookers lining the avenues and people waving Venezuelan flags from rooftops.

A motorcade of white vans and police vehicles with flashing lights escorted him along the highway to the airport.

Cuban health care is generally considered good, but oncology experts not involved with Chavez's care say he could be taking a risk by skipping more respected facilities in the United States, Europe or Brazil — which has Latin America's most advanced cancer centers with specialized radiation equipment.

"If you have a 'common' cancer, that of the breast, colon or lung ... then it's going to be easy to find standards of care that are the same in the U.S., Brazil or Cuba," said Dr. Julian Molina, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "The problem comes when you have a tumor that's not one of the common ones, and that's what most of us suspect Chavez has."

Latin America's top cancer doctor, Paulo Hoff, who heads the cancer center at Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes hospital, considered the region's best, would not talk specifically about Chavez's case. But he did say that a cancerous tumor in the pelvic region would be mainly limited to four types: prostate, rectal, bladder and sarcoma, the latter being a rare and deadly form of tumor.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, a retired army lieutenant who accompanied Chavez in his failed 1992 coup, said Friday that the Venezuelan opposition should be the most worried about the president's survival.

"The people in the street will not retreat a single millimeter, not a single millimeter, from what has been accomplished in these 13 years" since Chavez took office, Cabello said.

Chavez allies have accused their political foes of hoping the president will die, opening a door for the opposition to win the Oct. 7 vote.

Rival candidate Henrique Capriles has rejected such allegations and said he wishes for a Chavez recovery so Capriles can triumph "fair and square."

Luis Vicente Leon, director of local polling firm Datanalisis, said Chavez's most important political concern is convincing people that he's healthy.

"It is a different scenario if in the mind of voters an idea remains that the president is ill, with his near future compromised," Leon said.

Buses and cars fitted with red balloons and carrying Chavez supporters clogged streets in central Caracas early Friday on their way to the presidential palace, honking horns and blaring music from loudspeakers in the back of pickup trucks.

Government offices organized morning masses to pray for his health.

"We know and are sure that he will return strengthened, from a spiritual, human and physical point of view," Food Minister Carlos Osorio told state television.

Chavez plans to continue governing from Cuba instead of delegating authority temporarily to Vice President Elias Jaua. He has not said when he might return to Venezuela.

If Chavez was a socialist, he would have served one or two terms and let leadership float, and if he had been any good his party would retain power.
But he has not don't this he has made himself something like a king and as the Internationale says:
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear...
Can't see Chavez in there, anywhere, but I think he might be in the next line. Look it up.

Your point is true in a post-revolutionary environment. Venezuela has a well-funded, vitriolic opposition that favors dismantling constitutional protections and institutions (2002) and reversing most of the social spending that benefits the majority. The dilemma is whether a charismatic leader is the only way to further the revolutionary goals, or can the PSUV survive without Chavez out front. What makes socialism is who owns the means of production and who makes decisions about production and distribution. This is what is being worked out in Venezuela, and the region. If you can't see Chavez anywhere in the process of creating socialism, what would his successor do differently? Is term limits your idea of democracy?

Another day in America. Thumbs down, no answers.

MarkP: I don't understand how a semi-literate former soldier as Chavez is going to solve any of the problems of Venezuela. He single-handedly has alienated virtually any capitol from being invested in the country due to his nationalization of foreign business. Your opinion concerning term limits shows that you have much to learn about human nature and our world! At the present time the only reason he is STILL in power is because he has stifled dissent by running a virtual police state. Acquaintances of mine from Chile, who have travelled to Venezuela on business, say "If you want to stay 'healthy' in Venezuela, watch what you say and be careful WHO you say it to!"

As i have said before If Mr Chavez want to get the best treatment all he has to do Is ask the State department so he can come to the US and have his cancer tumor remove Since if you want the best on CANCER research and treatment you have to come the US i know this personally Instead of going to Cuba am not saying doctor's in Cuba are not good but the US has spent a fortune on research on Cancer in the last 10 yr alone and have been doing this since the 1960's

It's actually quite surprising that Cuba apparently has better healthcare than Venezuela, despite suffering from the blocade, having a failed communist system, and lacking natural resources.
      • Fred 3 mths ago
The only country "blockading" Cuba is the United States- everyone else is quite free to travel and trade- you know there us a huge demand for all the manufactured products, high end technology that all communist countries are so famous for. That must be why Cuba is so rich- LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

If he is so great, why is he having to go to another country to have surgery done??? Venezuelan surgeons aren't good enough to do the job? Shows what a great leader he isn't
      • Gitone 3 mths ago
His movement had great potential but he has stayed too long and his bench has withered up. Right now he's a one man band. If he had been a great man he would have stayed in office no longer than Washington.
As for the Cubans, they have been exporting doctors and medical care for decades.
      • Califas 3 mths ago
Cuban medicine is superior to that of many other countries, and is low cost. However if you want low cost plastic surgery, go to Costa Rica.
      • MarkP 3 mths ago
@Gitone, had great potential? Bench withered up? If you are really following events in Venezuela as the socialist you claim you are, you would know that there are deep debates about reform vs revolution in the PSUV. Pace and depth of the process of a relatively peaceful attempt at transforming production and distribution to a socialist model is no easy question. The issue of Chavez at the helm is also no easy question. You may have noticed that there have been open discussions at the communal council level and among PSUV members regarding term limits. Ending term limits was rejected at first when part of reform package, and later approved when bundled with fewer reforms, both times as a national referendum. Chavez continues to be ELECTED by his supporters and the PSUV continues to nominate him. There are always risks that come with entrenched leaders, but if, as a "socialist" you are seeking to create a new system, why are you so beholden to the rules of the game established by the capitalist elite? Sounds to me like you are trying to referee a process, not achieve any real, objective change. In America that's really just a liberal that everyone calls a socialist. You know, like Obama.

Instructions for Cuban surgeon: Search for a discolored, bulbous, distorted lump of flesh. Don't cut, as this is Mr. Chavez. Now place Mr. Chavez in a supine position and twist the upper body laterally at the hip 50 degrees. Assist him in kissing his devilish a** goodbye.

This power monger will cling to his throne until the last gasp of breath.
If he doesn't bad mouth America so frequent and so much, he could have been allowed to go to Houston, where the world's best cancer treatment center is.

While he is away, I pray the Venezuelan people have the courage to take back their country! In fact, while this monster is in Cuba, they need to rise up and prevent him from returning to their country. Let's not forget that Cuba is only a short distance from our country so perhaps he has another motive for going to Cuba other than his 'so called ' surgery.....

no matter what Chavez does ---live or die--he has started something that will grow--and all of so america is endorsing it!--salude Hugo !
